I just pulled my stock pilot bearing. It looked good at 29,000 miles until I beat the hell out of it with the puller and slide hammer. In this case Id stick with the stock stuff. Thousands upon thousands of camaros and trans ams went out with them and failure is not that common.

Thank you all for reminding me just how much I love my old pilot bearing. When the trans came out I had all kinds of black dust everywhere... black dust that I thought was just old 130k mile stock clutch... until the stock clutch looked FINE... but the trail of black dust lead right up to what used to be the pilot bearing. Oh I found a few little needle bearings, but most of it was black, melty, and only partially intact bearing. I guess on the positive side I did get to purchase a blind hole bearing remover. It made short work of removing what was left of the old pilot bearing race... as the rest of the dispicable thing was busy making my input shaft look like beaver log. I would also like to not think about how I could have had a sponsor beef up my trans too for a few hundred bucks more So, the next time that I hear a strange noise, even if its coming from the hatch or a squeeking door hinge, Im ripping the transmission back out just to ensure that its not a pilot bearing preparing to eat 4th gear. Something to keep in mind
