Default T56 question on fluid

I know this topic has been discussed many times but in my research I couldnt find a def. answer. I read that cars made before 01 arent supposed to use synthetic fluid. Is that true? And also my local shop told me to buy Red Line MTL for the transmission. He is also a fellow F-Body owner.
My car is a 2000. Do you think it should be a problem in the transmission?

thank you

You can use synthetic, don't use redline or royal purple. redline isn't API approved, no telling what that can do, RP has been shown to eat away at the blocker ring material.

I've been having really good luck with Castrol ATF in mine lately. I've tried a few different fluids i a few different T56's, some of them make the synchro's feel a bit heavier (because they're slipping and not accelerating the shafts to allow the splines to mesh)...Castrol seems really good about keeping them from doing that. When it's VERY VERY cold outside, the first 1-2 shift I just go extra slow, then after that it's usually fine.

I've never heard anyhing specifically different about the synchro's before and after 2001...but I wouldn't bother running anything super fancy in a T56, if anything I think you're spending more money for LESS performance.

Honda ATF is actually a really good ATF, but for the price I think Penzoil is just as good. I found Mobil 1 and Amsoil don't mind cold weather at all which is why I still use Mobil 1 for my transmission. Also helps that it goes on sale from time to time as well.

so mobil 1 synthetic ATF is good for cold weather? I've been trying to find a fluid that works well when the tranny is cold, mine shifts real bad when its cold out. how is it in the hot weather?

The mobile 1 synthetic made my tranny feel super notchy, I ditched it for some regular dexron III and the tranny felt much better.

I was told by Six speeds INC to use mobil 1 synthetic. Thats what they use and recommend. I just put that in my t56 in my s10 so we will see how well it works once i can finally drive this thing.

Mobil 1 here and no issues with my trans. Over 95k and still going strong. But it may need a rebuild soon with the turbo's now.

I found the same thing with Mobil 1 (there's no e in Mobil)...it made my trans feel like ****. When I rebuilt that trans myself with D&D parts years ago, I tried Mobil 1 in it again, on their advice for their blocker rings...and it felt like **** again...in warm and cold weather...I've never tried the Honda stuff...I've read that it's fantastic, but I just can't bring myself to walk into a Honda dealer to buy parts for my car. Both times Mobil 1 did that, soon as I changed to something else and drove it for a few days to get some shifts in and get the fluid into the friction material on the blocker rings again the trans started to sihft smoother and easier.

I think the message to take from this whole thread is there's no fluid thats really BAD...even when I didn't like Mobil 1, it never damaged anything...and I mean...4 quarts of fluid doesn't break the bank...if you pick one and fill it and you don't like it, it really only takes like a half an hour to jack the car up, drain it, and put something else into it.
