You have to disengage the e-brake at the handle to just get the console off. Having it in neutral makes it easier to remove the u-joint clamps and drivehaft during disassembly and to get everything lined up during re-assembly. I had the car jacked up at all 4 corners so the e-brake doesn't play a safety role here. There's probably some stuff I'm forgetting but those are some things I remember doing.

As stated it makes the removal of the driveshaft much easier, but i left it in neutral then got it so I could get to the 4 bolts on the u joint holding the drive shaft in. Then pulled the e-brake so I could lock the driveshaft in place so it didn't spin when I was wrenching on the bolts. I also had my car jacked up on all 4 sides, and I didnt mess with removing the shifter I just dropped it down with the tranny and removed it once I got the tranny out.
