Default T56 won't bolt to bellhousing 3/8" gap.

Ok, the engine is a LS2, but the transmission is from a LS1.

The clutch is on straight the alignement tool moves in out out freely. The Transmission slides in all the way, but i have a 3/8" gap. I dont want to keep torqueing the bolts because I found out the hard way yesterday when a small piece of the bellhousing broke off around the thread.

I had it tig welded and its more than sufficient for use, but it doesnt solve my problem. Is there something i'm missing??

Sounds like its not lined up straight. Keep messing with it and it should slide right in there. Those plastic alignment tools work alright but a metal one works better. You might have moved the pilot bearing alittle bit the first time you tried to force it in.

I had the same problem with mine the last time I had it out. It took 3 of us and 4 hours to get it back in there with the car on jack stands. It will eventually go.

I am having the same problem on my friend's '94. Will and old muncie input shaft work or are they different splines? Not trying to steal the thread, but rather throw out an idea

Is it an iron block? If so, the early models crankshafts were longer causing the trans not to bolt flush to the block.

It's a 06 ls2 aluminum block. I think the transmission is a 01.

The clutch is definately the right spline.

Try cracking open the slave bleeder, make sure the two alignment pins on the trans aren't getting hung up......I had to chamfer the edges of mine.

Still not working. I even used the transmission as the alignment tool. I can feel it slide into the pilot bearing, but it's definatly not flush.

I've tried everything and out of ideas.

Probably the wrong answer here but me and a friend tried for about 2 and a half hours to try and get the transmission to sit flush and it still just would not go on enough to get the bolts to catch and pull it in... out of sheer anger and frustration i picked up a rubber mallet and vigorously beat the transmission around the outside towards the engine from the sides, the rear etc.

It slowly beat in close enough to get the bolts in and everything after that is history.... I had to use quite a bit of smacking.

^ I can get most of the bolts on it; the bellhousing will crack before the transmission sucks in.

Pull tanny out of the bell housing. Then try taking the bell housing loose about 1/2 inch or so from the block but leave bolts installed. Then reinstall the transmission into the bell housing with about a 1/2 inch or so gap from flush. Then VERY SLOWLY tighten the bell to block bolts, then tranny to bell bolts. Repeat these steps until it's flush. Now only do this procedure if you are 100% sure that the alignment tool didn't move and that's the clutch is perfectly aligned. If you aren't sure go ahead and pull it all back down except PP because you can just loosen those bolts and realign the clutch disk. Worked for me!
