Default To all the Spec haters

I have a old spec 3I in my car thats still holding strong. My clutch is about 4 years old , was broken in at the track when I did my burnout before my 6,700rpm clutch dump. The clutch is kind of due to fail by now. It slipped on a dyno pull recently but it has done that before and it was fine then so it should be fine now. I go to the track and run a 10.5@130mph with a 1.45 60ft. After that run the clutch proved to still hold. Next run I blew my ring and pinion apart in my spooled 12 bolt. I never thought my clutch would out hold my gears. I know there are lots of people that have had bad luck with there spec clutches and there has been a ton of spec sucks rants.I just wanted to post up a positive spec rant then a negative one. I know my clutch is due to go from all the abuse it takes but it's holding for now and when it does go I will buy another spec clutch

I have nothing but good things to say about my spec clutch.I have a engine protector plate and a scatter sheild . You know , the things that you should have in a high performance race car to protect yourself when your turning 7000rpm. I won't get in to the debate your trying to strike up. Just remember that lots of people have install errors but still point the finger at the manufacturer.

Well I am happy to read something like this. I am not very happy with my current clutch and am seriously considering a spec for my next choice.

We use spec all of the time. We had it in our race car when it went 9.30's. It had 400 passes on it launching at 7000rpms, shifting at 8000+rpms and over 40K miles. I don't have a problem recommending there clutches to any of our customers.

Thanks,
Amber

It's entirely possible that some portion of the bad experiences with SPEC clutches are due to improper installation, given the varying skill levels (and ability to read a manual) of the do-it-yourselfers.

maybe the 3i is golden because i've had mine on my car for a few years now and it works great. i don't drive mine as hard as you, but i do daily drive my car now. clutch has decent amount of miles on it. (~20k including over 10 track runs and 10 dyno pulls)

We've had bad luck in the past with Spec clutches, but two weeks ago my brother decided to give the Spec 3 another shot, so we'll see how it goes. I'm currently very happy with my Tex, but I have no info on longevity yet, so we'll see what happens. I'm not totally opposed to going against Spec in the future if my Tex ends up crapping out on me, but I'm hoping it doesn't. The pedal feel between a Tex and a Spec is a no-brainer, but you pay for that.

I daily drive my car with a spec 2 it sucked at first only because I couldnt power shift, but it shifted pefectly fine under normal driving conditions. But then I swapped out my master cylinder to a mcleod adjustable and now it power shifts as smooth as butter,I havent miss a powershift since. I love my spec clutch it so smooth and easy to drive.

Wish they still made the 3I. That was a great clutch.

Is the 3I different than the 3+? I'm guessing it was just the regular stg 3 with the lightweight option?

I have the spec 3+ as do many others in my area and it definitely a great clutch for the money

Our 3I material was a predecessor to our stage 3+ which is an evolution of the material with a lower metallic content. Both utilized full-face disc designs and provide great drivability and durability but the 3+ is a bit more forgiving. Again, thanks for the kind words. Let me know if I may be of any further assistance!

BINGO !!!! It doesn't help that the hydraulic systems on the F body flat out suck either . I've used several SPEC 2/3/4 clutch kits in our Mustangs and when properly adjusted with a good driver , they last . Biggest problem is they are hell on transmissions . When the clutch does not slip , something has to give and usually its the T5 behind it . I have even destroyed a Tremec 3550 with a SPEC 3+ in my car a couple of years ago .
