Help! I cant get my t56 in..
Im trying to finish up my swap today and i cant get the damn trans in. I get the input shaft through the clutch and as soon as the pressure plate touches the slave cylinder it wont budge. Ive got about an inch or so gap between the belhousing and trans. The alignment tool goes all the way in. Should i grease everything up or what? Help would be greatly appreciated.

make sure ur input shaft does not have play...grab it and move it up/down and side to side. how about the pilot bearing? make sure it the correct inside dia. size... otherwise u need to wiggle trans till it goes in... and also check guide pins for dirt/rust. make sure it's clean and slightly lubed with antisieze.

I would say that your PP is not aligned correctly, the plastic alignment tools that they give you with the clutch are junk. Autozone sells a steel pp alignment tool kit. I would never put the transmission in with the trans bolts b/c you might push the piolet bearing back to far into the crank and it would be a bitch to get out. If that doesnt work the only other thing is to crack the bleeder open.

ok ive still been goin at it. i re torqued the PP and everything. The alignment tool went in and out and we still cant get this thing in. Is there any way to make sure its going straight in? I can feel it hit the pilot bearing it just seems like nothing is perfect enough and dead on. Ive got 3 guys and were using the bottom four bolts to judge how straight it is. Anyone live around me and wanna come help?

I've had this problem like 3 different times on my car. Like the guy above said, the plastic alignment tool sucks. My problem was that yes the plastic tool would go in and out but I kept hitting the pilot bearing with the shaft. You need to re-align the clutch to where there is no drag on that plastic alignment tool. The plastic tool has some give to it, the input shaft doesn't.
You can figure this out after everything is tightened by putting the alignment tool in and then puling it out, turning it so different teeth go in different slots and putting it in. In my case when I did this I could feel more friction after turning the teeth on the tool. You just need to keep trying to re-align it till it has no friction in all positions and it will slide right in.

Ok ill try that too. Thanks a lot
Heres a few pics. Theses just show about how far out im stuck. The trans is resting on a jack during theses pics, thats why the holes and bolts are a little off
Here you can see the slave touching the PP but thats as far as it goes...

The trans isn't straight in the pictures, the gap between it and the bellhousing is noticeably varying from side to side.
The trans has to be straight before it will go in.

But on a side note.. Trans is in! We pulled her out at exactly 4am this morning. I ended up doing exactly as WS6 Jay said and it slide right in. We realized that before, everytime we would take our hand off the tool, the plate sag and we would tighten it down that way. So the last time we held the tool the whole time and made sure it slid flawlessly.
Thanks for all the help guys!!!
