Default input shaft run out???

I finally got my trans from a member on the boards that dhl lost, the shipment was shipped from houston on 8/12 and I just got it at 4:15 today !!! My question is the box was really really beat up. Upon further inspection the input shaft looks bent, we put a dial indicator on it and it has.050" run out. How much is safe???

I doubt the input shaft is bent . Its going to be hard to check it like you are doing since the input will have some side to side once installed .

Yup. The side-play will show up as run out, especially if your turning the input while reading the dial.. It may be less pronounced if you turn the tail with an old/spare yoke. If you can have someone also holding the input shaft lightly (ala pilot bearing), it will also help lessen the measurement error.

How exactly are you measuring the runout?

When you turn the input shaft by hand it looks bent as you turn it, so we put a dial indicator on it and turned it and it measured .050" run out.

we put the dial indicator on the small part that goes into the pilot bearing, and it was .050" and then behind the spline was .020"

This runnout measure may be accurate but it means nothing in the opperation of the trans. Since the pilot of the input is held in the bearing( crank) while the trans is used, what you are meausing is just buisy work. The true spec for the trans is the end play of the input gear. That is an accurrate "in/ out" measure of the input bearing shimming. Although the "wag" of the input you observe is part of this , you are not looking in the correct place to determine the health of your trans.

What do I need to look at and how do I do it to determine if my trans is good to go, I need to get a claim filed with DHL or to get the trans in. Please let me know what I need to do and how.

Thank you

It would be most rare that you have a bent input shaft( if even possible at all) . It is fairly safe that there is no claim you can make against DHL( shipper?) If you think the input is too loose, measure the end play. There is a spec of .003in on a new transmission. I suspect this can easily grow though with a break-in , say .005in on a used trans so that is what one should be looking at for a max. end play.

I know this is an old thread, but I'd be interested to know if the OP was able to determine the cause of the run-out that was measured ~.050 (even though it's not the "proper" way to diagnose the trans setup). Did you run the transmission without changing anything? Did the trans/pilot bearing survive?
