buying a car from private party in IL....question!
Ok, I am more than likely buying a Jeep from a private party seller this weekend. My question is this.....how do I pay sales tax on it, how do I get it home with no plates, is there some way I will manage to get fined/ticketed for not having plates (I wil have to drive it over 100 miles back home)...since I am getting it on Sunday and can't really go to the DMV.

You pay sales tax on it when you get back home and register it in your state. The plate thing, when I bought mine out of state, I just took the plate off my DD and used it. However, if you are going to drive with no plate, I would bring proof of insurance so if you got pulled over, you could explain the situation. Hope this helps.

In IN if you go to the BMV you can get a 4 day temp plate for like $9 if you really want to be safe and lawful, but I think that if you have a newly signed over title for the vehicle that will serve as a registration. I would definitely have insurance lined up for it, or let your provider know that you will likely be adding X vehicle to your policy. I believe my state farm policy gives me a couple days of full coverage after a new vehicle purchase before I have to actually change my policy. Also, you will pay tax on the vehicle when you go to get your permanent plates.

haha...actually, I am my insurance agent, which is pretty darn convenient. I have the expired plate from my previous DD, maybe I could use that or just drive with no plate. I don't know which one would get me in more trouble.

Drive with no plate, have a bill of sale, and have the title if you're signing it over at that time. Ask anyone who knows me on here, I buy more cars then car dealers. The wrong plate will get you a lot more head ache. Honestly, you'll probably not even get pulled over once.

i drove home with no plates. Make copies of everything,,,State of IL tried telling me i didnt pay taxes of $750.00,,,lookin at my copies, i paid 900.00. They still didnt beleive me after i sent in the paperwork i received at the DMV,,,,so i had to track down the cashed check from the finance company i went with....Since they (St of IL)enlightened me with proof of an overpayment, i pursued them for a year to get the $150.00. took forever, but i got it back.

yep illinois allows you to drive a newly purchased car for X amount of days without buying a plate. I do not remember the specific amount of days but it is at least one. Just make sure you are carrying your bill of sale and signed and dated title with you as proof of your new purchase.

Es no problemo.
Just drive with no plate with bill of sale, insurance, and title in the car. I drove my last car 200 miles home with no plate and didn't get pulled over once.
Just in case....remember you bought it for no more than $14,999

I was always told you had 24hrs from date of purchase to register it. As for the under $15k rule for taxes. I know a guy that pulled it off but have heard a few say that the state went after them.... saying it was worth alot more than they claimed. Anybody else? Turbowhistle, i'll be glad to see your car not sitting downtown this winter You at state farm or the other?
