JULY 7th, 2009 STREET CAR SHOOTOUT SERIES FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Tim Mallicoat Collinsville, IL 68 565 Camaro -0.037 8.720 155.61
RU Curtis Paulfrey Brighton, IL 68 502 Camaro Could Not Appear

Tim “Moose” Mallicoat continued his rampage with his sixth consecutive victory in the 2009 Street Car Shootout Series at Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Illinois. Mallicoat’s victory may have been his easiest this season but the event was not without surprises; for the second time this season, Mallicoat was joined as a finalist by his son, Tim, Jr., who scored a runner-up finish in the Super Truck Showdown. Mallicoat, whose naturally-aspirated, 555-cubic inch Chevy-powered M&M Automotive/Huff Motorsports “Hellraiser” 1968 Camaro has been in all ten championship final rounds this season, has won nine times and amassed an incredible 19-1 win/loss record for the year…a staggering round-win average of 95.00%!

While the racing surface held even the highest-horsepower machines, Mother Nature made sure horsepower was hard to find. Unbearable humidity, (almost ninety percent), and low barometric pressure kept the corrected elevation almost identical to the June 30th event, (between 1676 feet and 2352 feet above sea level), despite cooler temperatures. Cloud cover kept the surface temperature of the starting line below 115 degrees, however, and traction was never an issue.

As has been his gameplan through the season, Mallicoat made but one qualifying run, an 8.73-second blast at 155.49 miles per hour, early in the qualifying period and remained uncontested for the pole position in the Super Sixteen field. Joe Rudy, whose nitrous oxide-injected yellow ‘69 Camaro joined both the 8-Second and 150 MPH Clubs during the June 30th SCSS program, scored his first Top Four qualifying effort with a solid 9.12/149.93 with another one-run strategy. One of the most unique and competitive entries in SCSS competition made its first appearance of the season in the third slot as Jim Landis made the long trek from Oreana, Illinois, to qualify his one-of-a-kind 1980 AMC AMX. The manually-shifted, naturally-aspirated ride, powered by a 420-cubic inch product of famed West Virginia Rambler engine builder Barry Allen, unleashed a wheelstanding 9.76/140.62 to make the field ahead of 2009 Super Truck Showdown winner Don Moore’s bigblock-powered ’91 S-10 at a 10.26/123.62 effort.

Two names missing from the Top Four were Ray Arthur and Curtis Paulfrey. Locked in a struggle for the second position in the 2009 SCSS Point Standings, both had problems with Arthur suffering the worst; his nitrous-aided “Suspicion” ’67 Camaro ran into massive electrical problems during early qualifying and was quickly retired without even qualifying for the Super Sixteen field. Paulfrey, whose naturally-aspirated 502-inch ‘68 Camaro has been struggling through several chassis configuration changes, clocked runs of 10.42/133.20, 10.34/132.70 and 10.31/129.62 to fall in the fifth qualifying position, gaining five valuable points over Arthur and moving into second place in the point battle. Moreover, Moore elected to compete solely in the Super Truck Showdown which allowed Paulfrey to take the black S-10’s position in eliminations.

Paulfrey, always racing against his self-imposed 9:30 PM racing curfew in order to report to his job on time, appeared to have few worries about arriving late to work. The yellow Winner’s Circle Tire and Auto-sponsored ‘68 Camaro was scheduled to meet Rudy’s eight-second monster in the opening round of eliminations. In fact, Rudy had made a late timed trial in his McNamara Towing Camaro after qualifying had ended and posted a stout 9.06/149.86. When the two staged up for the first battle of the semi-finals, however, the fans gasped when Rudy inexplicably redlighted by more than three tenths of a second! Rudy’s crew chief, Outlaw All-Stars Super Street champion Chris Webster, could only shake his head in disbelief as Rudy thundered to a losing 9.09/149.27 but the worst humilation was yet to come. In the other lane, Paulfrey annihilated his three-speed automatic transmission as he shifted into second gear and coasted down the track without power to a 22.78-second victory at the slowest speed ever clocked on a winning SCSS pass, 29.20 miles per hour!

In the other half of the semi-finals, Landis and Mallicoat met for the fourth time since 2007 with Mallicoat holding a perfect 4-0 record between the two. Landis, whose green AMX was runner-up in Outlaw Eliminator at the recent debut of the Outlaw All-Stars program, also made a late timed trial pass of 9.62/141.34 but knew he needed a holeshot advantage against the “Moose”. Landis pushed the ‘Tree too far with a foul start by a tenth of a second before running a 9.66/141.53 against Mallicoat’s always-consistent 8.77/155.47.

As expected, Mallicoat was the only driver to return in front of the main grandstands for the final round. Even if Paulfrey had not experienced the transmission damage, he never would’ve made the championship battle since he was already late for work! “Curtis caught a ride from the top end, jumped right into his truck and headed to his job”, said his father and crewchief, Joe, as he watched Mallicoat stage up for his 8.72/155.61 solo run for the trophy. “I went down and got the car. We’ve already loaded it up and we’ll take it right to the shop since the series has a week off. We definitely hurt it but we gained six points over Ray Arthur so it must’ve been worth it! We’ll get it fixed and we’ll be back on July 21st”.

NOTES FROM THE SCSS: He may not have qualified in the Top Four but Greg “Hook-N-Ladder” Boschert was a happy man. The St. Louis firefighter pushed his well-known white ‘66 Mustang coupe to a fantastic 10.72/129.65 career-best in qualifying and improved to a 10.68/129.29 in late timed trials all while “pedaling” the ponycar through the first sixty feet on 8.5-inch rear tires. The nitrous-fed small block Ford has been responding to adjustments in the progessive controller Boschert installed this season and it looks like he is on his way to figuring out one of the toughest combinations in SCSS racing…Bryan Winkler posted a strong 10.75/126.95 with his black 2002 Camaro SS to become the 127th member of the SCSS 10-Second Club and the 219th member of the 120 MPH Club…Bob Moche’s ‘68 Chevelle also joined the 120 MPH Club with an 11.44/124.08 qualifier…Brad Homer qualified for the Super Sixteen field for the first time running 11.84/113.28 in his ’95 Mustang…Nick Foubeck’s ’03 Mustang and Eric Moore’s ’99 Camaro also qualified for their first SCSS program…Mark Elmore’s 572-inch ’68 Chevelle visited the ten-second zone for the first time since April 21st…Ralph Dehne’s crowdpleasing original 409-powered ’63 Impala ran 12.28/114.70...Asmir Catic, one of the original SCSS racers from the inaugural 2004 season, debuted his new bronze 2002 Camaro and just missed the Super Sixteen field by twenty-eight thousandths of a second with a 12.46/110.51 best during qualifying…Jason Politte’s silver ’86 Mustang cranked out a 10.83/123.70 in late timed trials…Mark Yehling’s white ’97 Corvette qualified at 12.20/111.97 and hit a 12.15/113.34 in late timed trials…Aaron Worstell drove his ’89 Mustang to the High School Eliminator racing for Union (MO) H.S. over Tim Mallicoat, Jr. in his ’92 S-10 running under the Collinsville (IL) H.S. banner. In the final round, Worstell had a stunning 0.001-second Reaction Time!

JULY 7th, 2009 STLSR.COM SPORT TUNER SHOWDOWN FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Brian Wallace Arnold, MO 09 134 Cobalt 0.007 13.760 105.14
RU Dan Harris St. Louis, MO 04 232 Mustang 0.081 Broke at 60 Feet

In what could easily be one of the biggest upsets of the 2009 season, unheralded Brian Wallace became the thirty-fourth different winner of the St. Louis Street Racing.com Sport Tuner Showdown in a battle he wasn‘t even supposed to fight. Against the undisputed dominant driver in the division this season, Dan Harris, Wallace pushed his turbocharged 2009 Chevy Cobalt SS to an unlikely victory as the third alternate in the field.

Harris, who has won the Sport Tuner title four times in eight final round appearances this year, took his 232-cubic inch V6-powered “Six Bang ‘Stang” to a 12.53/107.17 to secure a record eighth straight final round berth behind Sean Kennedy’s impressive turbocharged V6-powered 1987 Buick Regal Grand National which led the Tuner contingent at 12.47/110.86. The rest of the top five included June 10th champion Scott Keller in his blindingly-white ‘87 Regal T-Type, (12.77/100.63), Kyle Rennert’s amazing 245-cubic inch six cylinder-powered gun metal-grey 2006 Mustang, (13.41/105.91), and Wallace’s four-cylinder Front-Wheel-Drive Cobalt at a strong 13.54/106.23.

When Kennedy, Keller and Rennert failed to appear in front of the main grandstands for the final round, Wallace got the nod and pulled alongside Harris ready for war despite a one-second deficit. In his first trophy dash appearance, Wallace left the starting line with the second best Reaction Time in Tuner Showdown history, (launching seven thousandths of a second after the green light!), and suddenly found himself all alone on the GIR quarter-mile; Harris destroyed the drive train of his Mustang just off the starting line!

“We killed the rearend”, said a frustrated Harris after the run. “I felt it pick up the left front wheel off the line and then the rear just broke and I was dead in the water”. Despite the breakage, his final round appearance put Harris at the top of the list of consecutive Sport Tuner final round appearances with eight. Meanwhile, Wallace was ecstatic as he accepted his first Tuner trophy in front of the main grandstands during winner’s circle ceremonies. “I just drive it. It’s his tuning that makes it run”, said Wallace, gesturing to Ryan Egelston of P&P Tuning. “We’ve done a bit of work to the car but between Ryan and Matt at HTP Performance we’ve managed to get quite a bit more out of the factory turbocharger. The 2.2 LNF Ecotec engine, which first came out in 2008, makes 260 horsepower stock so it’s a great platform to start. We’re real happy with the mid-thirteens but there’s a lot more left in the car”.

JULY 7th, 2009 GATEWAYRACEWAY.COM SUPER TRUCK SHOWDOWN FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Don Moore Pontoon Beach IL 91 468 S-10 0.571 10.246 123.40
RU Tim Mallicoat, Jr. Collinsville, IL 92 350 S-10 -0.067 (foul) 15.062 90.41

Don Moore, who scored his first victory in the GatewayRaceway.com Super Truck Showdown on June 16th, returned to the winner’s circle with his black ‘91 S-10 pickup while running quick enough to qualify in the Top Four positions in the SCSS! With a fresh 468-inch powerplant, Moore qualified on the Super Truck pole with a 10.26/123.62 which sounded a tad rough but was more than three-quarters of a second quicker than class stalwart John Brawley, who experienced plenty of problems with Ray Arthur’s “S-10 Revenge”.

After Arthur’s own ’67 Camaro was retired from the event when it suffered electrical problems, Brawley’s machine ran a slowing 11.03/118.36, (far from its normal 10.50/125 pace), drawing enough concern that Arthur elected to withdraw his truck entry, as well. That left Steve Watkins’ black S-10, (13.11/98.36 before hitting an 11.79/110.34 in late timed trials), Nick Marino’s yellow 2003 F-250 Lightning, (13.70/108.04), and Lee Bradley’s black 2000 Lightning, (13.98 at a slowing 84.27), to fill the field. Ironically, none of the alternates was able to make the call for the final round and it was April 8th Super Truck winner Tim “Little Moose” Mallicoat, Jr., who eventually appeared as fourth alternate with his blue ’92 S-10 which, only minutes before, had scored a runner-up in High School Eliminator!

Mallicoat used the pass as an extra timed trial while Moore needed only to hit a green light and stay in his own lane to take his second Super Truck Title. He managed to do both while recording a 10.24/123.40 which also indicated the new engine was not quite tuned to perfection. “It’s the first night back with this motor”, said Moore, whose black pickup now carries a decal supporting Scott “Lucky” Hudson‘s Speed Scene Live! InterNet radio talk show. “We haven’t gotten it tuned quite right yet but just the fact it ran nearly as quick as the old piece tells us it should be much stronger when it’s right”.
