When I lived there several years ago I was a bit south of Pekin. There were no inspections at all. Because of this I saw a lot of rolling trash heaps on the road too.

You could come register it in Iowa. No emmission inspections here!

Yes register the vehicle in the southern part of the state. I'll be near Springfield and there is no emissions test down there. You do see some trash heaps as stated though.

The only counties that test in IL are the ones in and around Chicago, and a few around the IL side of the St. Louis area. Everywhere else in the state is test-free.

If you do move to a testing county, all you will be facing is an OBD scan test (no visual or sniff in this state). You can pass with your current setup and the proper tuning, many people have.

On a side note, unless you really, really love your job, I would stay in FL. The weather here sucks, traffic sucks (Chicago area), taxes are stupidly high in every regard, and did I mention the weather? This is not a place that I would ever encourage anyone to move to. Then again, if you like snow and cold, then it might be a great move.

Gurnee is in Lake county, and they do test there. I worked in Gurnee for about 4 years.

Taxes (sales tax anyway) are better in Lake county. Chicago (about 35 miles south of Gurnee, and is in Cook county) is stupid high in this regard. In many areas around the northeastern part of the state, property taxes are out of control, though you can appeal them down a bit now that property values have crashed in most of the nation. IL income tax has nearly doubled in the last year as well (was 3%, now 5%).

How well do you handle snow? You will get plenty of it here.

Oh, and if you don't like the Governor here, don't worry about it - they usually end up in jail anyway.

Testing is done by ZIP code, not city.

These are not entirely correct. There is testing in several counties and ZIPs around Chicago, and also a few on the IL side of St. Louis.

Welcome to the area. Prepare for Illinois to **** on you. The OBD scans look for check engine lights and a certain amount of obd tests performed by the computer. I believe it was 5 or 6 of 8 tests had to be ready to pass.

thanks for the welcome!
I may just be pretty close to Antioch or maybe even there, still looking for a place but should have done next week.
I do have the security light on and the abs light has been coming on and off since I hit a huge pothole

I believe they look mostly for the Service Engine Soon light. If it is triggered or if there are any sensors that are malfunctioning/disconnected then you may run into a problem. Make sure you have sims or an SES Delete done. They also have the option of looking under your car for cats if they feel like it, which I've only had them do once (fortunately I'm legal...) Also, check this website and if you can, live in a zip code that is exempt from testing:

http://www.epa.state.il.us/air/vim/faq/testing.html

I think the table is backwards though, because I have lived in McHenry Zip 60156 and I had to get tested. Now I live in McHenry 60098 and I don't think I have to get tested.

There is no visual inspection in IL, they can't look for cats or look under the hood. Whole process takes about 1 minute. Alot of times the guys working there are into cars and will ask about it and look under your car but it is just the worker being curious.

There is no ILEPA sanctioned visual inspection in IL currently. They do not have the option of performing one as part of the official test, whether they feel like it or not. If they choose to check your car out, it has no bearing on your pass/fail status, which is based soley on the OBD scan test and not any sort of random visual inspection.
