APRIL 11th, 2006 SX PERFORMANCE STREET CAR SHOOTOUT FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Dave Odenahl, Waterloo, IL 1993 350 Camaro 0.288 10.218 131.84
RU Tony Huff, Collinsville, IL 1968 468 Nova 0.017 10.580 127.78

Dave Odenahl, the Illinois Camaro pilot who won the very first Tuesday night title in 2004, became
the first driver to win at least one championship title in each of the three years of the SX Performance
Street Car Shootout Series title at Gateway International Raceway. His renowned black Z28 earned
its third SCSS victory, (in five career final round appearances), with brutal consistency and enough
horsepower to squeak past Tony Huff’s ‘69 Nova in one of the closest SCSS trophy bouts ever.

Although temperatures were nearly twenty-five degrees warmer for the second completed SCSS
meet of 2006, nearly steady ambient air temperature between 75 and 71 degrees, extremely low
humidity, a strong tailwind and a solid 75-degree track surface keep the corrected elevation between
754 feet and 506 feet above sea level. The result was the tenth quickest “Super Sixteen” field ever
which included some astonishing performances, several of which reset SCSS Records.

While David Starns pushed his familiar silver ‘91 Mustang to the quickest effort in timed trials, (an
early shut-off 11.35 at only 94 miles per hour), it took all of five minutes before the three-time
event-winning father and son duo of Tony and Robbie Buhl kicked off the official qualifying period
with a 10.84/123.61 blast from the team’s new 331-cubic inch Dart/Ford powerplant in their maroon
‘89 Mustang. Within ten minutes, the Ford was eclipsed by the first SCSS champion of 2006, last
week’s winner Tony Huff in his brother Dale’s silver ‘69 Nova, with a 10.37/128.54. While Chad
Berton’s wheelstanding ‘94 Trans Am and Starns were able to hit the ten-second zone, the close of
the first hour of qualifying brought Odenahl’s infamous black Chevy to the starting line and, clearly
announcing its intentions, the Camaro unleashed a 10.210-second elapsed time at 131.75 miles per
hour.

Huff improved to a 10.32/129.40, the best performance yet from his new Nova, but an unimpressed
Odenahl returned within fifteen minutes to post a 10.231-second elapsed time at a whopping 132.11
miles per hour to solidify his low qualifier position. To prove his point, Odenahl made one more
qualifying shot with only five minutes remaining and hit a nearly identical 10.237 at 132.33 mph!

Both Huff and Odenahl made test passes before the final round; Huff’s Nova moved toward the
center line and slowed to a 10.40/128.31 while Odenahl tried a higher RPM launch and spun the
tires to a 10.34/131.68. With less than a tenth of a second seperating the two, however, the fans
knew the final round would be a war. “I think he’ll go right back to running 10.20s”, said Huff before
the final, “so this one’s gonna have to be on the ‘Tree unless we can step up”.

In a rare championship round featuring two naturally-aspirated finalists, Huff’s Nova stumbled during
the burnout and the Collinsville, Illinois, racer was forced to back up and reheat the tires. When he
finally staged, however, Tony Huff was on a mission. With one of the best Reaction Times ever
clocked in a SCSS final, (0.017 seconds), the Nova jumped to a massive holeshot lead and was 7.5
feet ahead at the 60-feet mark. At the 330-feet mark, Huff was a solid 10.2 feet in front but it was
clear to all witnesses that Odenahl was beginning to close in on the Nova. At the eighth-mile, Huff
still had a 3.4-feet advantage but the black Camaro began marching and, by 800 feet, moved
alongside Huff. At 1000 feet, Odenahl was 6.6 feet ahead and, at the finish line, Odenahl had
stretched his advantage to a full car length, (17.7 feet), for the win.

“He left on me, that’s for sure”, said Odenahl while accepting his third SCSS trophy, “and it was
definitely close most of the way. I had redlighted once during qualifying and I guess I was a little
worried about that in the final. The car was really consistent, though, so that made up for me being a
bit late. We had a sway bar problem when we tested at the beginning of the year but, with that fixed,
the car’s right where it should be”.

One of the highlights of the event came during qualifying from SCSS 6-Cylinder ET Record Holder
Rob Nolan, who has resumed his quest for a 10-second timeslip with his turbocharged 231-cubic
inch V6-powered ‘87 Buick Regal. After several runs in the 11.20s, Nolan’s Granite City, Illinois,
Buick finally got boost and traction perfect and tied his 11.041-second record but, in the process, he
nipped the 53-week-old 124.52 mph 6-Cylinder Speed Record of Bill Hansen’s ‘94 Toyota Supra by a
mere four hundredths of a mile per hour, (124.56), to lay claim to both six-banger marks. Of course,
there was the mind-numbing performance of the number three qualifier, but that’s a whole ‘nother
(next) story.

APRIL 11th, 2006 GATEWAYRACEWAY.COM SPORT TUNER SHOWDOWN FINAL
ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Joe Laramee, Decatur, IL 1977 147 Pinto 0.500 10.544 129.58
RU Ross Randall, Chesterfield, MO 2005 122 Evolution 0.335 12.557 110.58

KA-BOOM!

That was the sound of the Sport Tuner Showdown Series being destroyed by the atomic bomb
dropped upon it by Decatur, Illinoisan Joe Laramee. If nothing else, Laramee may have already
earned the 2006 Award for “Run of the Year”.

Joe and Nick Laramee made their first Sport Tuner Showdown Series appearance in 2005 and their
diminutive ‘77 Pinto earned respect when it clocked 12.01 at over 114 mph with nitrous oxide
injection on its 147-cubic inch four-cylinder. When Laramee appeared in early 2005 testing, the Pinto
was equipped with a new turbocharger but experienced repeated problems similar to those which
kept the car incredibly inconsistent during 2005. During the first completed STSS event of the
season, Laramee stunned the handful of fans who heard announcer “Radical Rich” Tivitt mention the
one amazing aspect of a dismal qualifying effort in which Laramee rolled through the starting line
laser beams and then grenaded the four-banger before the finish line...an 108 mph eighth-mile
speed.

Well, folks, it wasn’t a fluke. One week later, Laramee returned with the 2740-pound,
rear-wheel-drive machine and unloaded with an 11.86-second blast which, although not an STSS
4-Cylinder ET Record, was coupled with an indication of the Ford’s potential...a 128.29 mph
top end speed! Those who paid close attention to the run, however, noticed the 2.39-second 60-feet
ET. The car wasn’t even launching yet.

To break a speed record by 5.62 miles per hour is insane but that effort paled in comparison to the
numbers which came up on the scoreboard at 8:41 PM. It was at that moment when Joe Laramee left
the line with a 1.66-second 60-feet ET and cruised to a 6.96/103.62 eighth-mile. Amidst the loudest
cheers of a the event and the screams of announcer Rich Tivitt, most fans were simply in shock at
the sight of a four-cylinder clocking 10.74 seconds at 128.90 miles per hour.

Laramee, whose many businesses include one of the largest pyrotechnics firms in the midwest, (USA
Fireworks which, among other things, services most NASCAR races nationally), and Performance
Porting Service, (which supplies most NASCAR “Mini-Stocks” with cylinder heads), had worked hard
for the return on his investment. “Our biggest problem last year was in fuel delivery”, noted Laramee
after the historic pass. “We solved that problem and then came to Gateway for early-season testing
and basically shook the shortblock apart. Then, last week, we destroyed our best cylinder head. This
head is nowhere near as good, but everything’s still together”.

The 10.74/128 run was not exactly unprecedented. Eric Cheatham’s STSS Record-holding
rotary-powered Mazda RX7 from Belleville, Illinois, recorded the exact same numbers in 2005 but
was disqualified for lack of required safety equipment. Cheatham has spent the winter upgrading the
RX7 to legality. Still, Laramee’s run was just shy of one full second quicker than the existing
4-Cylinder ET mark, the 11.62 set in 2005 by the Corbitt Brothers’ ‘85 VW Golf.

Qualified a distant second was the upset winner of the first ‘06 STSS title, Ross Randall’s potent
Mitsubishi Evo VIII which had upended Brian Orsborn’s quicker Dodge Neon when Orsborn’s shifter
**** came off during the final. “I’m gonna hex the Pinto guy”, joked Randall before the match with
the Pinto, “and maybe his shifter handle will come off, too!”. Randall had qualified with a
12.79/109.17 ahead of Jeff Warton’s ‘05 Subaru Impreza WRX, (13.35/102.88), and the similar Evos
of Eric Null (13.44/103.38) and Jon Blaylock (13.51/103.87).

In the trophy match, Randall gained a holeshot of eighteen hundredths of a second and thundered to
a best-ever 12.55/110.58. Unfortunately, few fans noticed. Laramee left with a 1.58-second 60-feet
ET and continued on to a 6.76/104 eighth-mile before finally stopping the clocks with an ungodly
10.544 at 129.58 mph.

“It sure is nice when things work out”, understated Laramee while accepting his first STSS trophy in
front of Gateway’s main grandstand. “Now, we have something to work with. I really think there are
going to be other cars in this class this year which are going to run similar times. That RX7 is one of
them. It’s going to be pretty tough”.

Cheatham, you’ve been called out.

APRIL 11th, 2006 GATEWAYRACEWAY.COM SUPER TRUCK SHOWDOWN FINAL
ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Hal Marshall, Collinsville, IL 1986 350 S-10 0.243 10.871 125.72

After losing his first final round in the last six outings, Hal Marshall wasn’t too pleased with the first
event of the year. This week, things started out worse.

The Collinsville racer’s first run down the track was a carnival of nightmares which included a balky
shifter, spinning tires, and a misfiring ignition. After the 12.83/100 tragedy, Marshall was hot, stating
in a stern voice, “After all we’ve done, I almost want to tear it apart and start all over again. That was
ridiculous!” The run still led qualifying for the Super Truck Showdown with only Lon West’s yellow
Dodge Ram Hemi close at 13.28/103.09.

Marshall and his crew of seemingly hundreds of friends and family members thrashed on the truck
and its transmission through most of the event, stopping only for an 11.33/124.16 improvement which
was still off the white pick-up’s normal 11.20 pace. When West and past Super Truck Showdown
champion Shawn Rose both failed to appear for the final, Marshall decided to make a full run to test
the team’s repairs. In just 10.87 seconds, Hal Marshall became one of the happiest people on the
property. In addition to his first 10-second pass and a best-ever speed of 125.72 mph, Hal became
the third quickest truck driver is SCSS history and tied Sport Tuner Showdown king Patrick
Jacobsmeyer for all-time final round appearances at seven wins and three runners-up. Funny how
things happen like that...
