My neighbor just killed two snakes outside on his patio last night at about 6:00. Did not look like local snakes to me. One was 3ft the other 4ft. Not sure what kind though.

Typically the poisonous snakes (rattlers included) have a wider head compared to their body. Look at the snake and see if that is the case I have not heard of any rattlers in Illinois, but I guess it could happen. Most of the poisonous snakes I hear about around here are cottonmouths, and even then not that often.

I do see some decent size rat snakes every now and then, some were probably 4-5 footers.

Being from the 51st state (Southern Illinois), I've seen a few rattlers. Cottonmouths and copperheads are more common, but there are some rattlers in this area.

At least they weren't on a plane.

I lived in arkansas for about 6months and saw many rattlers, copperheads, cottonmouths, coral/chicken snakes, puff-atlers, watermokisins and the worst I only saw one a diamondback rattler.

The snakes never creeped me out but the wolf spiders, the size of your hand are freaky.

besides copperheads, does IL have any poisonous watersnakes like a cotton mouth or water makasin.

I know IL has the Brown recluise spider which is a poisonous and mean ****.

We have rattlers in Indiana.. Apparently they were becomming extinct in this area so some enviromentalists decided to let a bunch loose.. So if we have them I'm sure the possibilty of Illinois having them is not unheard of.

we also have black widows are indignous to this area as well, just far less common than brown recluse', i love wolf spiders they look mean as hell, and there non poisonous but very painfull bite backs them up.

ive never seen water makasin's here in IL, but i have seen them in souther wisconsin, so tis very possable they are here as well.

Did a search and came up with this info.

Rattler common to Illinois is the Massasauga Rattlesnake, it is found in bog or swamp areas as well as dry fields is highly toxic to man reaches lengths of 2-3 1/2 feet. Often called the Blacksnapper or Swamp Rattler.

Another possibilty is the Timber Rattler found mostly in the West and South-Western part of Ill., in rocky wooded hills. It is sometimes mild tempered and rattles a good deal before striking. Reaches lengths of 3 1/2 -6ft.

These are the only ones, that I could find common to Illinois unless of course someone decided to dump a few off around your area. good thing it was small...still could cause some major discomfort.
