Default What could cause it?

I was leaving work and went to start thet car and it just died. I tried twice and it did the same thing. I had to feather the gas to start it and then when i let off it dropped to 400rpm and then shot to 1100rpm then down to 800rpm. I drove it home and then it idled fine. It was a 20mile drive. One thing thats got me worried is lately i've been hearing a ticking noise it kinda sounds like a exhaust leak but i was listening in under the hood and it sounds internal. The last time i heard a ticking noise in my car was in my 98 Z28 and i wound up replacing pushrods, which i hope is not the case. What do you guys think it could be
