security light on, friends camaro wont start, how to fix/bypass?

security light on, friends camaro wont start, how to fix/bypass? a friend of mine has a 2000 z28. screen name LMDz28
a couple of times when going to start the car the security light comes on and the car will not start. The few times it happens, he just waits a few minutes tries again and the car starts.
What causes this? and what is a good fix besides a new ignition column?
is the key worn out?
is their a chip reader in the ignition that is worn out?
can the security be bypassed and how?
is their a way to clean it? if dirt causes the problem.
We hope to get this fixed fast because we are taking the car racing friday night august 17. It would suck to be at the track with a car that does not start. LOL
I have never had this problem with my 2001 z28 but my 94 z28 did the same thing a couple of times but then I drove it another 1xx,xxx miles and never had the problem again. Its odd....

The wires break to the pass key pellet contacts inside the lock cylinder.
The norm fix was to replace the lock cylinder.
You can bypass it with resistors of the the same values/resistance as the pellet in the key.
