Default Emissions in the Chicago Area

My Formula is my first car and I haven't really gotten a definite answer on emissions yet. I have heard that they do random visual testing. Is this true? The reason I am asking this is because I've decided to get Hooker Comps and would like to also get an ORY if at all possible (I know I will need a tune or 02 simulators to pass). I currently have the LM catback and I'd be swapping the resonator for the XR-1 if I did go the ORY route. I am in Cook County, if that makes any difference. Thanks for the help.

I wouldnt even sweat it if your planning on tuning out the codes. If you read up on the stickys in the bolt on section, even with Long Tubes, you might have a problem with the sniffer. And if your REALLY worried, drive by the testing facility and wait till its busy. I havent had ANY of my cars "visually" checked.

Illinois does not do ANY visual checks!!
All they do is plug it in to the OBDII port and check for any codes, so get the rear o2's tuned out, and any other AIR or EGR equipment tuned out.
When I went to tune my car at straightline they tuned all that crap out!
I also went to the emmision testing facility in bedford park, no waiting, no CATS (with the MODS in my SIG) and passed with a NOTICEABLE lope and overlap smell NO PROBLEM!

In the past they would do the under hood inspections and the rolling speed test. Now with the state funding cut backs, they only do the tail pipe sniff at idle. My truck passed with headers and my buddy passed with no cats.

Good luck

This is exactly correct. There is no such thing as "random visual inspections" in IL. That is pure

There is no more sniffer test of any kind in IL. Pre-'96 cars do not get tested any longer, and '96+ cars receive on an OBD scan test. No sniff, no eyes.

Thanks guys...that's exactly what I wanted to hear. Looks like I'll be going with the ORY setup.

Pre-'96 cars don't get tested anymore? So, does that mean that I shouldn't worry that the 94 Z28 I'm looking at had the cat taken out and a cutout put in it's place?

My 94 is exempt... Got a letter from the state and everything.

What's a "cat"?

Nah man, you'll be ok. I have LT's with no emissions. I just bought the tune from madz28 and passed with flying colors. You'll be fine.

No sweat! I had my codes tuned out at straightline an went the next day. Passed no problem an even bs'd with the guy about how loud the car was(LM1, LT's an no cats) It was funny cuz he was talking about how he sees like lambos an all those cars but how he loved my car an the ws6 was one of his fav cars. Even if i didnt pass i still think he woulda jsut let me go since he liked the car so much! lol
