Default Lackland AFB - Places to eat/visit

I am heading down to my nephew's graduation on March 1st and 2nd. I am looking for some info on a good place to take him to for a celebration dinner. I understand that he wont be able to stay out late at all so I am looking for something local.

Any help would be great.

All around Lackland is packed on weekends due to graduations. I was there for a few months after basic for part of Tech and went out a few times and can say without a doubt the farther from base the better unless you don't mind wasting an hour or more waiting for a seat. The two best places I found to eat were nothing fancy but Texas Roadhouse and Fuddruckers, both of which were near 410.

Thanks for the info, I have never been there and have no idea how bad traffic is and such....... I am use to it taking forever to get anywhere here in NY. Hr waits are a common thing here as well.

I found a great deal on a Flight/Hotel/Rental car package and will be staying at the Spring Hill Suites in San Antonio.

Is the traffic horrendous in the AM's going toward Lackland AFB from there?

Getting on base the day of the coining/graduation will be a pain. San Antonio never really had much traffic that I saw (compared to the bay area), but when you get to the gates chances are you'll be there for a few. If you need to get the background check try to do it the day before if possible, if its not possible try to get there early on Thursday. The Valley High exit off of 410 is the best gate for you to use, its the closest to the basic part of lackland, I think there are like 5 gates or something crazy, but the Valley High one is the one you want.

Oh and just so you know, on base there are roads that are blocked by big planters. Don't be the family that drives on those roads lol. There is always someone that does it and if by some chance your Nephews MTI see it and finds out, it wont be good haha.

The riverwalk would be a great place to go! specially if you never been there. around there you have many dining facilities that you can choose from as well. Good luck and my congrats go out to your nephew for graduating.

Thanks again Gents, I had actually been researching Riverwalk. I assume it's the overcrowded/overpriced/touristy spot?
