Default Which AFB's to stay away from.

Well, I leave for basic Tuesday and I was wondering what Air Force bases I should not list, like which ones are crappy and which ones should I list.

I want to be on the east coast and im open mech with an aptitude score of 87.....I know shitty but o' well.

It doesn't matter what you put on the "Dream Sheet". Chances are slim to none that you'll get one of them

It's not as bad as what most will say. I've been here for almost 4 years and don't plan on going anywhere soon

But I've been TDY to Patrick and Hurlburt in Florida and like the areas a lot, especially Patrick. Just watch out for those hurricanes.

Did you get a guaranteed job from MEPS?

If you know the AFSC (USAF Job Code), we could probably figure out what bases to PUT ON the dream sheet.

Doesn't make any sense to become an F-15 Crew Cheif and say you want to goto Andrews, there aren't F-15's there....lol

Ya get me?

Yep, that happened to me. I had all 10 slots filled in on my CONUS "dream sheet" and I received orders to a base (Charleston AFB, SC) that was not one of my selections. I really can't complain about Charleston though. It ended up being a good assignment.

find a base where money is spent on the troops ex: housing, gym's, mwr. take grand forks for example shitty weather ok town low cost of living and had the best facilities i have ever seen at any base. now at yokota japan is freaking awesome, but its expensive as ****, the base housing was built in the 50's and is rundown, along with every other building on base with few exceptions, they all have asbesto's in them our cryo building would be condemned anywhere else for the overall condition, there are few jobs for spouses and aafes has no competition so you get to enter drawings for a chance to buy things prices are rediculous btw, and you will were the same clothes as every one else on base cause nothing off base will fit you. sorry im ranting now.

i thought the forks was bad but believe me even the good bases suck to some extent.

It really doesn't matter what base you go to... it's what you make of it while you're there. Depending on your expectations and what you're looking to get out of the assignment will greatly affect whether the assignment is "crappy" or "awesome".

Just come to Shaw.

There are no F-22's permanently assigned to Andrews AFB. I think you may be confusing Andrews AFB with Langley AFB.

Cannon AFB, NM pretty much sucks if you're single and want a night life. I didn't really mind it, I was married and grew up in a small town. Hill AFB has been pretty nice since I've been here. Lots of high level supervision always watching you here and always have their fingers in everything but otherwise I really like it. Lots of stuff to do around here, about every store adn restaurant you need within probably 10-15 miles, lots of mountains and stuff for the outdoorsy type...

I understand the underlying philosophy here, however, you can't polish a turd.

The factors that seem to influence whether or not a base sucks is the people, and then what you do there for a job. Great people and a paced workload can turn a shitty locale into a great place to work. Poor leadership and a high ops tempo can turn a paradise into a hell hole.

Im stationed at Langley in VA. Its a nice base but really busy. Lots of stuff to do around the base and the surrounding cities. If you want east coast I would say Langley or Andrews would be your best bet.
