Default Lingenfelter Flat Crank LS - engine dyno

Ever wonder what a flat crank LS engine would sound like?

Found on Lingenfelter's forum:

"Here is a dyno video from last night of the new Lingenfelter 358 CID LSx flat plane crank race engine for our new white Gen V Camaro SS. This engine is putting out 621 horsepower @ 9,000 RPM running NA.

Next up installing the 76 MM Garrett turbo!"

Definitely don't dig that sound. Sounds like an exotic.

What are the actual benifits from a flat crank? I know they like to rev. How come the factorys don't use it?

They can rev pretty high, but they suffer from vibration issues because they lack rotational balance.
Balance shafts can limit the vibration but they are very rarely used in racing applications.

They also have a much shorter stroke than your typical cross plane crank. Which is why this LPE built LS is only 358ci.

BTW, production cars DO use them, but those are Ferrari V8s and other exotic V8s.
The flat crank is part of the reason Ferraris sound the way they do.

Personally, I think it sounds pretty mean.
I wonder what it would sound like with a meaner cam.

The one on the right is a flat (or 180*) crank:

Here's an illustration (that I found on corvetteforums) that better details the differences between the two:

I like.. 9 grand redline would be fun. Now I just need to convert to an M6 and come across a small fortune to get one for my car.

It sounds like the Skyline from fast and furious. And it doesnt seem like there are many advantages besides higher revving.

I'm guessing that along with a different crank, you need a different cam and need to reprogram the spark order as well.

I think with more cam and compression they'd through up some Cup Car HP numbers!

Can't wait to see this in the car!

The way I see it, it has its advantages and disadvantages but either way I think its cool as hell. I just cant wait to see that 2010 Camaro flying down the road sounding like a ferrari. It can't be that bad, Ferrari has been doing it forever and their newest 458 Italia has a very powerfull V8. Maybe I am bias because I'm half Italian. A closer ratio trans will be chump change for Lingenfelter and thats all they need with this kind of motor.

Dont know why the headers are glowing maybe it needs some timing? But thats why Ferrai v8 sound so crazy. I think its badass that there putting in the R&D in the LS engine,I want to hear it in a car ripping.

I've been waiting to hear about a flat plane crank for the LS motors. Sounds about what I figured it would. Sweet!

I think it sounds awesome.

And yeah, from what I understand, it would require a custom cam.

I'd like to see what Lingenfelter or someone else could do with this crank and a dedicated NA build.
I bet it would be pretty insane.

Since the firing order is changed, you've got to change the cam, injector firing order/wiring, as well as change the plug firing order.

Yeah, I'd imagine so.
