Default Just got a 1995 Impala SS w/stock LT1

Is it true that installing an LS1 is more trouble than it's worth?

If I have 7-8k to improve performance, what would you guys suggest? Should I go for the crate ZZ4 w/385 bhp for $4,000? Or should I rebuild the LT1?

Any thoughts?

Thanks a lot! My first post...

Oh.. I forgot to ask the question.. will a ZZ4 drop into an Impala? I know these questions are mundane.. but I'm starting from the top. Finally got some cash together to actually put some of my ideas to work on cars..

$7-8k will build a pretty stout LT1. I'd go with a 383 forged internal LT1 bottom end, and then throw a set of ported/polished LT4 heads and manifold on there with a nice thumper cam. That will put out more than 400 easy. Later on, you can swap out the cam for a blower cam, bolt on a T-trim and put down 550-600rwhp. That should haul @ss.

Yeah I've heard a lot about the LT4 head converstion. Only thing I'm worried about is the condition of the LT1. It has 125k on it and is leaking a bit of oil. Wondering if a rebuild versus a new crate or used LT4 would be the right move.

You could always get a LS6 crate engine.

gymratt,

i've heard from people that the LS engines won't clear the frame. with all the adaptions it ends up not being worth the effort when you could just charge up an LT1.

that is probably my biggest question. can anyone confirm or deny this? i'd like to know if the zz4 or ls1,6 would drop into an Impala

If your thinking of changing motors types and like crate motors don't think ls1 or zz4. Think ramjet 502.

Did you try posting this in the conversion/hybrid forum? They'd probably have a little more insight.
