it means make the engine spin.

one way to do this is to "turn the key"

Crank over = turn over = make engine spin = turn key. If you need to crank the car without actually starting it, disconnect the coil pack harnesses on each side of the engine.

Okay, that's what I thought. I'm going to be running some GM top end cleaner through my engine. I was going to put the fluid in the plug holes, and after you let it sit you need to turn the engine with the plugs out. I just wanted to make sure it was safe to do so by using the starter.

Yeah that's fine to do ... just make sure you put some towels outside your plug holes, because when you turn it over fluid is going to fly everywhere.

Mustang: From what I have read, the liquid is supposed to do a better job of getting rid of the carbon deposits.

phantom: Right, the instructions I found said as much. So I should just drape some towels around the area to prevent it from splashing all over the area?

When I used the aerosol version I let it soak for a couple of hours (8hrs exact)then I turned her on and it was smoking like a SOB...kinda scary seeing all that white smoke coming out the pipes

You got it ... unplug the coil packs so the engine won't start, then put towels over the headers/manifolds, and over everywhere else .... the fluid will fly pretty far, so make sure everything that you care about in the path of it is covered.

Then hop in the car, turn the key, let it crank for a few seconds (or whatever the directions say) then you're all set.
