I bought some m1 oil and a m1 filter. How much oil does a LS-1 take? I bought the car and there isn't a manual in the glove box. Thanks for the help and sorry for the newb question.

For reference you can go to autozone's website and look up the amount of oil you vehicles engine needs for most vehicles. I had the same problem you have when I bought my Jeep.

Either 5.5 or 6. It depends on how long you wait for the oil to settle before you check it. When I worked at a Chevy dealer some guys would start up a car/truck. Let it run for 20 seconds, then immediately check the oil level. This is incorrect. You need to let it sit for at least 5 min. to let the oil in the valvetrain settle to the oil pan. I learned this the hard way after leaving GM and going to work for John Deere. A 12.5L diesel engine will hold 1-2 gallons of oil in the upper end for 2-5 min before it drains down. Now that is a little over full!!

5.5 is what my manual says but I run 6 because of all the bearing failures due to apparent oil starvation. I was reading some posts last week about guys running 7 who road race/A/X thier cars. That seems excessive to me me but maybe 6.5 would be fine and not have the crank kick up oil and aereoate it. That would seem like the biggest issue to me????

6 would be ok, but I'd think 7 would be a bit much. I put to much oil in a old truck I had and it smoked very bad. I'll try 5.5, let it sit for 20 min. If I need more I'll put in the half quart I'll have left. Thanks for the info guys. I have alot to learn about the great LS-1!!!

You more oil you run the more power you will lose with oil drag on the crank. Yes minor, but just put what it is called out from the manufacture. The dipstick is also not calibrated. So with the proper size oil filter... it calls for 5.5 quarts.
