Default Metal or plastic gas tanks in LS1 cars ?

I was told that some year LS1 cars have metal and some have plastic, is that right ? If that's true and if I have a metal tank can I switch to a plastic if I find a pull out from another car and would everything go in just like with the metal one ? I have a 2000 and I'm not sure what I have and it's raining out or I would look.
