dropped engine! help this idiot!
hi new to the forums, i did the dumbest move.
had engine (ls2) on engine hoist about 2 feet in the air...then snap and bang the chain snapped, the engine rotated 90* and fell on the passenger side vavle cover! luckly the chain was still holding half the weight of the engine but the valve cover broke. I go all the metal fragments out and replaced the valve cover, visual inspection of the head shows no cracks or any movement relative to the block. My question is will my engine be ok? I know it was a stupid move on my part :b ang:

Damn. I would hope its okay, but really. I have no prior experience dropping engines so I really don't know if it will be okay or not.
But you should get us some pictures Or get the engine in the car and start her up and listen for the boom.

the rockers fine, it only shifted the vavle cover about an 1/8 of an inch and cracked the vavle cover where the bolt goes through it, it hit the very back corner of the passenger vavle cover and from the looks of it it the vavle cover absorbed nearly all the impact...

Damn Bro!! Luck that didn't hit you or the car. That would blow if you dropped it on the front fender or your foot. But I would def pull the head and check that all out also the block and pistons at that time should be ok. Its not plastic so a two foot drop you can get away with. just don't make it a habit.

Yea unfortunatley I have expierenced this however not on me though I bought a motor from guy who got it from a junkyard and the valve cover was cracked (Lq4) When i was turning the motor over by hand I would hear this weird ping sound every couple of revoultions , My buddy and i narrowed it done to a particular cylinder and took some advice from my dad and use a cordless drill to move the valve slow and sure enough I had a bent one due to the fall and the valve was sticking and unloading uder extrem pressure upon turning the motor over, so I took it to the machine shop they fixed it for 100 but the head gasket was 65 alone so that sucked but well worth it to happen while the motor was out of the car so I would check the valves on the impact side , Good Luck !!
