Default question

On my original sale sheet for my 98 camaro z28 it has performance axle as a 350 dollar option. What does that mean?

It means you have the optional performance gear ratio of 3.23:1, rather than the base ratio of 2.73:1. This was only an option on auto trans cars, all the 6-speeds received 3.42 gears with no other ratio being optional.

PS. This option also means your car came with the aluminum driveshaft stock (2.73 cars still came with a steel shaft).

I was curious if there was a code to look for or anything to check if your auto has the optioned 323 instead of the 273.

Fixed..

The 1/4 times can go either way... The other options (cloth/leather/hardtop/etc) will play a bigger role than those gears.
The worse thing about 2.73s is 2-3 WOT shift is terrible in dropping RPMs.

Look in my latest SR&K thread.

I had a buddy with a 2.73 '00 Z28 and it ran HARD. Better than most intake/catback/lid cars.

All cars run different.

Yeah, but not by much, maybe a tenth or two; that's about it. Reason being, the 4L60E has a very aggressive internal 1st gear ratio (3.06:1) so launch is usually stronger than most street tires can handle anyway, thus traction becomes more of a limiting factor than gear ratio at launch (that, and the fact that LS1s make great torque even at low rpms, so they get moving pretty good even with a rather mild gear). Now if you put two otherwise equal cars on competition tires that would deliver 100% traction for either gear, you'd see a bigger difference in performance between the two ratios.

Of course, launch isn't the only thing that gears effect. As mentioned above, the smaller (numerically) your gears, the more rpm drop you'll see at WOT upshifts. So there's a slight performance reduction in that respect as well.

3.23 geared car WILL run faster then an identical car with 2.73's on an identical run.

You can't have an identical car if one has 3.23 gears and the other has 2.73's

No I meant as far as identical options.... Was just trying to say that if you took one car with a 2.73 gear and made a run down the 1/4... then changed the gears to 3.23 and nothing else... it would do a faster pass.

OP asked if the $350 option was a waste, im just trying to say that it is not a complete waste.

OHH you shoulda said so! 3.23's would be faster. That's why people get 3.73's and 4.10's!
