Default Rearend question.

I swapped rearends in my 98 Z a couple days ago. I knew it whined when I got it. And it doesn't bother me all that much. But I took it to my tuner to have him fix the speedo since I was going from 2.73 to 3.73 and he said when he drove it, it sounded like a pinion bearing. Is there a way to tell? I changed the fluid in it and noticed it has a Torsen Dif in it. Is that better than the Auburn I had in my 98? And if it is a pinion bearing making the noise, can I just change that bearing? He told me I needed all new gears if I change the pinion bearing. Thanks for the help!!!

if the gears are ok,no you don't need a new gearset to change pinion bearing(s).

Usually a pinion bearing will make noise no matter if you put a load on it (giving the car gas) or not (car coasting without applying gas). If you give it gas and it's loud and then let off and it's quiet, then my guess would be your actual ring and pinion having too much play in between them, not the pinion bearing.

Is the whine/noise in time with the tire rotation(once per tire rotation) or about 3 times per tire rotation.
once indicates carrier or wheel bearing(s),about 3 times indicates pinion bearing(s).
if it's constant, typically that would point to gearset.

It starts at about 10 mph and gets worse. Below 35 mph, if you let off gas, it continues to whine. Above that speed, it seems to go away if you coast. Its fairly constant with the gas on.

Sorry I can't help on the whining issue, my experiance with diff/axle bearing failure is probably less than other's on this board so I'll stay away from that part, however:

I've had both diffs, and I really prefer the Auburn-style. The Torsen tends to chatter a lot during certain manuvers, even when it's working perfectly. Most people are probably used to it, but I have both at the moment so going from car to car this difference stands out to me.

Thats weird about the diff. I haven't noticed that. But then again, I can't hear **** over this noise. So, maybe thats why. Anybody else have an idea about the whine? Thanks.

If the whine is as loud as you say it is, my guess would be it's the pinion bearing. I would try just changing that bearing and see what happens. Also Auburn is a lil better than Torsen.
