Default Cats on ORY

Hello all,

I am in MD & will be purchasing a 02 Z28 in June. The car has LT's, ORY, & catback... To pass inspection it needs to have cats, is there any way i can put cats on the ORY? Let me know.

Thanks,

Kyle

Do they do a visual check for cats in ur state or something? You need cats in all states... but doesn't mean you can't pass without them...

Not sure, They might. I thought cats were an essential part of inspection? I know emissions is a big deal, but i also thought inspection was.. Hmmm, maybe i can get by?

http://www.mva.maryland.gov/MVAProg/VEIP/veipinfo.htm

# The idle tailpipe test is required for:

* Model year 1977 - 1995 passenger vehicles and light duty trucks.
* Model year 1977 - 2007 heavy duty vehicles up to 14,000 pounds.
* Model year 1977 and newer heavy duty vehicles 14,000 - 26,000 pounds.
If I'm reading this correctly, your vehicle does not need a tailpipe test. If I'm right, then the only thing they will do is check your computer for OBD errors. As long as the rear o2 sensors have been tuned out of your PCM, then you shouldn't need to run cats.

X-Ray.. I checked the link you posted & that is for emissions testing, not inspection. Some places check for cats & some only check for Safety (Lights, Signals, Window tint, ETC...)

What ORY and headers do you have? It might be as easy as having some one weld some in or you might have to purchase another y-pipe.

Thats the thing... I like it without cats (the sound), plus its already tuned to pass emissions without the cats.. I was wondering if there is anyways to bolt them on to the ORY/they dont have to be functional haha just want em to look like there fuctional.

When did you purchase the y-pipe from us? If it is the new version we can probably just sell you the catted pieces to go in the y-pipe. Let me know.

Buy a cat from junkyard, gut it, and weld it in. Or, buy one of these and have it welded in:

Jon- I did not purchase the ORY, im buying the car with it already on.

X-Ray- That would work, but would i have to get it retuned to not throw a code after cutting Y pipe.?

First of all, I was wrong to speak in singular. You will need a pair of those fake cats, or a pair of gutted cats. Secondly, no you will not have to get it retuned.

Cool. I will prob get those CAT look-alike's. Just paying someone to cut it up and weld it will cost more money, any way to bolt it on?

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will answer this question, but I doubt you can just bolt it in. And if you can I don't know how.

If you try to bolt it in its probably gonna have major exhaust leak issues. Its just more reliable to weld it in. But you could always give it a shot...

Thanks for all of the replies, this is all very helpful. I was thinking of just clamping them on to the Y-pipe (not the piece connecting to the header, just on the pipe itself) it shouldnt matter cause there just gonna look to see if i have cats ya know?

You know, originally you said you weren't actually sure if they have a visual inspection. You should call up where you going to get it inspected and just ask them. Ask them what's involved with the inspection and what they look for, if anything. If they don't to a visual, you won't even need to worry about this.

Where are you buying the car from? Doesn't he live in the same area as you? Because if he does then he should know how to pass inspection.

Mention it with the owner, if he lives in the same area then this is an issue he has already had a few times. Maybe he has a catted y pipe laying in his garage for it.
