Default do mufflers rob HP

Someone told me that installing a flowmaster muffler actually robs Hp. Is this true?

a restrictive muffler will create more backpressure, which does not let the engine breathe as well, thus resulting in less horsepower. it's not so much the flowmaster that robs it of HP, it's the fact that the muffler doesn't flow well.

There is a flow chart on here somewhere. I think the Flowmaster is slightly better than stock, but horrible overall. I used to run it. What a mistake that was.

Flowmaster makes some of the most restrictive aftermarket mufflers. I've read a few examples of cars that lost 20-30whp going from a straight pipe to a flowmaster muffler.

The Flowmaster is great for sound but poor on the flowing side. I'm sure it holds back some power being I just took mine off and swapped on a Magnaflow Muffler and it feels more responsive. Flows much better and much more quiet. If you want my Flowmaster it's yours..lol

Get a Corsa. It makes up for the horsepower loss in sound compared to straight pipes for sure!

Any muffler is likely to rob some level of power over a straight pipe (some may only be 1-2hp though).

If your question is whether a Flowmaster will rob power over a stock muffler, then the answer is no. But, if you're asking whether it will rob power over a straight pipe, then the answer is yes.

The Flowmaster crossflow design that's used on the F-bodies certainly isn't the best flowing muffler on the market. However, their non-crossflow mufflers are a better design.
