98 cntr console..takin it out to change it

The A4 shifter **** has a little slot on the front part of it and you can take a pair of needlenosed pliers and pull out a locking clip. After that you can pull the **** off.

if you pull the e-brake all the way up you should be able to get the counsel up and over it, otherwise you can disengage the brake by the cable it connects to.
