Default "Shifter method"

Going to replace the fluid in my t-56 and I been wondering how do you do the shifter method? I know you pour it in the hole, but what do you remove and whatnot?

To get the fluid out, remove the drain plug on the tail housing. Then remove the center console (bolts for the console are easy to find and there are 2 pieces to it, 2-3 connectors pending if you have traction control and a unsnap a light for the ashtray. There may be a rubber mat (if your car has one on it, not all do) above the shifter. Unbolt the shifter and pour in your fluid in there. Then bolt the shifter back on and put the console back in. My recommendation is to pull the fill plug on the passenger side of the t56 and wait for fluid to start coming out so you know it is full. But it should take roughly 4 quarts. It is the easiest way to swap fluids on a t56. Just make sure you dont use synthetic if you still have the stock synchros in it, synthetic will slowly eat away at them.

Okay, so I pulled the shifter out, now where do you pour the fluid at? There is two small holes on the top and bottom.

Just pour it down into the tailshaft where the shifter is mounted. It will start running into the transmission as you pour it in.

^^^ yup, then re-assemble in reverse. Easy as pie fella Also, make sure you RTV where the shifter mates to the tailhousing. It will most likely leak if you don't seal it up.

You guys got it all wrong. Lift the car up evenly. Drain the old fluid out of the drain port. At the parts store get a 5 qt jug of you choice of fluid, right next to those jugs will probably be a fluid transfer hand pump for about 5 bucks. It will screw down down onto the top of said 5 qt jug. open the mid plug on the side of tranny, stick the hose in and start pumping. The pump will hold about a qt, so as so as you start sucking air and the fluid doesn't want to pump anymore, out will seep the fluid from the mid plug...ie 4qts in the tranny. Put the plug back in, set her back on her feet, and clean up. About 20mins tops.

Birds of a Feather, I have owned about 6 pumps that just don't last that long and gave up on them years ago. Thats why I don't recommend that way anymore, but you are right though it can be done that way. The only thing I personally will use a handpump on now is the rear axle, but only because I have an s60 which is almost impossible to fill without one.

Just changed my trans fluid an hr after I made this thread, and I got to be honest, it was pretty easy filling it up from the shifter.

I have to agree with Birds of a Feather, I think taking the console/shifter assembly out is more of a hassle than using a hand pump to get the fluid in the fill port.

Filling it from the tail shaft is a lot easier when you are reassembling the car after you've had the transmission out though. Unfortunatly had the opportunity to figure that out as many times as I've had mine out.
