The biggest cam we ever put on a 5.3l motor is a 224R cam. Anything larger and you will find that the low end power loss is just too much for a street driven car.

It will fit, but I don't think it would be very good for street driving. The low end power loss is just too significant for me to say it would be alright.

I ran a 232/236 .595/.601 in my stock 5.3 with stock converter and 3.73 gears, daily drove the **** out of it, 20+mpg, I cut the EXACT same 60' with that "big" cam as I did with my stock cam, but gained a lot all the way down the track...No low end loss here. All the drivability is in the tune up. Mine didn't buck or ever want to die, drove like stock, just sounded badass

I am glad you were able to get that large of a cam to work with a stock converter on a 5.3l motor. I have never seen that done. From what I have seen in the past, cams that large usually don't work so well in that small of a motor.

That cam with no converter on a 5.7l would be terrible to drive, again this is just from what I've seen.

Terrible to drive or to race? We've had a 244/248 cam in my truck, just because I needed to drive it and didn't have anything else and it still DROVE stock-like...no bucking, no idle issues, no two footing or wanting to die.

It sounds to me like the guy is just wanting to have a nasty sound...for that, the cam he is wanting to use is a great choice in my opinion. I'd use it, and a good tuner and never look back.

Not trying to argue with you or come off as a dick, just explaining to the OP what we've been, what I consider, successful with. If he doesn't have someone that can tame that cam down in the tune, then no, he probably shouldn't use it.

Terrible to drive. You must have an awesome tuner to be able to get those sized cams to drive like stock in a 5.3l motor. They are much larger then anything we have ever tried to put in a 5.3.

I am not trying to argue either, you are just doing stuff that doesn't make any sense to me.

LOL yeah most people say we're retards

My truck has never been anything that I would be scared to let my 80 year old granny drive. I can walk outside at any time, fire it up, put it in drive and go and it never skips a beat...But yes, it definitely requires a great amount tuning.

What are some options as far as off-the-shelf cams that could be put into a 5.3? The 5.3 will be going into a 2002 Trans Am, weekend warrior/cruiser. I just want to add alittle sound and power over the stock cam.

Default The bigger the better

I would run a 625/625 from howards you can pick up the whole kit spings pushrods double roller timing chain etc off ebay for about 900 bucks as long as you port your heads you should make nasty hp on the cheap !

Default What cam would best fit?

Hello everyone. I have a 04 tahoe with a 6 inch and 35s. Im investing inna tuner but was wondering what cam would best fit for a stock 5.3l. Also investing in headers as well. Ive been told a cam and a torque converter would be good for it. Just looking for opinions. And i intend to use stock heads.

I had a trex cam in my 5.3. 242/248 609/612 110.

didn't kiss valves. I thought I read somewhere the stroke is the same on a 5.3 and 5.7.
only difference is bore.

It seems as though you may be on a little bit of a tight budget if you are putting a 5.3 in your TA. Thanks guy an TSP has a point there are much better cams for a 5.3. Will it run better than stock, **** yeah. Will it lose some down low, probably. If that cam is coming from your blown up LS1, I would use caution. When you do a cam swap and don't upgrade your oiling system **** goes boom.

Yes. A regular Corvette cam won't show much gain. If you are referring to an LS6 cam, it will show some gains and you can drop it right in with some LS6 springs and roll.

i guess i dont understand why you would go through all the trouble and money of doing a cam swap for just sound? if you want it loud just put a loudmouth exhaust on your car or a cut out, plenty loud enough!
