Default Air box lid

Is the ls1 air box lid any different between the ss and the z28? Cuz I installed a ss hood on my z28 but,the lid wont let the new hood close. Is the ss lid shorter?

But the ss lid is typically taller then the z28... Shouldn't have a prob unless the hood isn't oem or the lid...

There is no difference between the SS and Z28 stock lids and lower airboxes.

I'm guessing you have an aftermarket SS hood?

I had an aftermarket SS hood on my Z28 and had to cut a 4" x 5" notch to clear the neck of the lid. And a ton of grinding above the headlights. Ended up trading that hood for a stock steel one until I found a real SS hood.

This is correct. I'm not sure what the other posters above were talking about. Stock SS and Z28 air box assemblies are interchangeable, neither is shorter or taller than the other.

Maybe they are thinking of the WS6 lower air box vs a base Trans Am......now those are in fact different.

It is an OEM hood or some aftermarket brand?

There are some difference's sometimes. My best friend had a slp camaro and the lower airbox had a bigger hole at the bottom to let the air in. From my understanding it is only the slp ss's and firehawks. I might be wrong but I have been looking for the lower airbox with the big hole for my Z .

What fits might be trial and error with that hood, especially if it doesn't fit with a stock lid.
The one I had was over an inch thick, it was made of a thin fiberglass top and thin fiberglass bottom, both joined together with a thick bead of glue around the outside.

It looked like the air ducting was functional, but due to the gap between the two layers it wasn't. You can check by spraying a water hose into the scoop, mine would leak out everywhere except the holes in front of the airbox.

The OEM hood is approx 3/8" thick and is more of a one piece.

Only Ram Air Trans Ams as far as I know.

This is not correct for stock cars. As mentioned above, only the WS6s came with a taller lower air box stock (bigger hole to let air in). If you see an SS that has this, it is not stock. The only optional SS upgrade in regards to the airbox was the upper lid, not the lower section.

Quick Reply: Air box lid
