I know with things like this you get what you pay for, but i have a "Stock-ish"

2001 Camaro SS. I would like to know what you guys reccomend as a good

cheap turbo or supercharger. I know a turbo needs some fabricating and

it can backfire but what do you guys think are better turbo or super?

Plz no smartass answers b/c im not that mechanically inclined but i know enough to say kiss my ****. XD

A turbo will destroy a charger.a charger can only give you so much boost a turbo you can crank up the boost to blow the pistons out of motor.look at the mph on a turbo car over a charger car.You will probably spend a lot more money on a nice turbo setup.I say turbo.

Front mount with a decently built 347 and u will net some good numbers depending on turbo size and whether it an auto or M6! have fun with either way u choose to go! I vote turbo all day! I am doing a 370 with a 76mm snail!

My opinion... Def - Turbo.
Approx. $ 4000 for 5 to 6 PSI Boost tho.

If you have around 40k to drop on it, turbo is a must. You will be looking at 1000rwhp
Fully Built motor-10k
Turbo-6500
Rear end and tranny - 6k
Electronics including fuel pump-About another 2500-3k
Labor is probably another grand. Just whatever you do, once it starts getting "Tuff", don't stop and sell the car, finish it off.

A supercharger might be cheaper, but is not nearly as fun as a turbo.

Check out the F/I section of this fourm, as both turbos and superchargers are good choices just depends on what you are looking for in your setup. But to answer your question neither is going to be cheap IF you do it correctly

im thinkin he just wants some simple turbo he could add without breakin the bank and nothing that required a bunch of extra supporting parts or labor.

as you know...you get what you pay for but here is a cheapest basic starter turbo kit that has an i/c.

STS and other rear mounted turbo's IMO suck! If he wants "Cheap" Then a supercharger, because while going turbo, you will have around 10k invested in it, Unless you are doing it in your garage, but **** always goes bad while installing a turbo.

It depends on what you want... and your driving style.

Ive had both... a 10 sec TA w/ a vortech V-7 (th400) & a low 11 sec (well, thats the fastest its gone with 2.2 60') Camaro w/ rear mount turbo (6 speed). You can see which one I chose to keep...

They are COMPLETELY different animals. The supercharger absolutely kicks you in the *** of the line where as with the turbo your launching pretty much just on motor.

Off the line the supercharger smoked the turbo everytime. But once the cars were moving the supercharger didnt stand a chance. On the freeway the turbo will easily walk on .6L & 1L bikes... havent played with a busa yet, im sure that would be different.

The biggest difference is the driving style. The turbo w/ 6 speed is a PITA to launch, but IMHO WAY more fun to drive. The supercharger is awesome streetlight to streetlight.

Its also tough getting used the turbo, because you have very little power down low. So you have to remember to make sure your going to be in boost, otherwise it'll fall on its face. But with the supercharger... your always in boost. lol.

I personally wouldnt do a supercharger unless is was a magnacharger or one that replaces the intake. The side mounts are such a hassle. IMHO. Lots of people say there is more work with a turbo, but I think theres more work with a side mount supercharger. Ive had my turbo on for years, and havent touched it since it was installed.

If you want to be quick, and you want to do it cheap... and like you said, your not that mechanically inclined. Just do a gear swap (3.73 auto / 4.10 manual), suspension, headers back, some tire, maybe a small cam & ls6 intake. That'll more then take care of the majority of cars out there, be a ton of fun, with no real upkeep.

Once you get into FI, it becomes a lot of work... and things start breaking. You almost have to have a 2nd car just incase.

Ima make it easy for you to understand:

Turbo: You have to wait til 4 or 5k for the boost to kick in
Supercharger: You don't have to wait, it's making boost all day.

Borg Warner S475 is an inexpensive beginner turbo capable of up to 900hp
but on a stock engine I'd run only 7-8lbs. boost and you'll need at least a
3600 stall to cover the lag associated with a T-6 housing.

That depends on what turbo you get. Sure, a 91mm won't spool until way over 5k, but a 67mm will spool muchhhh lower. Besides, who races below 4k rpms?


OP, be prepared to spend 10k either way. It's all the little **** that adds up.

Imo, forced induction and cheap shouldn't go together. It's never "cheap" to do FI the right way, turbo or SC.
I would say if you're going "cheaper" and only shooting for lower psi (say under 10psi), then a bolt-on SC kit may be a little cheaper. But I've only researched FI for Corvette's, not F-bodies, so it may be different.
Either way, you're probably looking at $6k minimum, start to finish.

There are a few deals out there. My buddy just sold his sts rear mount system with upgraded turbo for about $900, just needed some wiring and oil pump. I really wanted to get it but didn't have the money at the time. Could have bought it, done injectors and ran low boost and got a dyno tune and have been set. IMO i think it can be cheap if you run really low boost but when all you guys start talking about 900+hp set ups and stuff I know that can get unreal.
