Default what to look for buying used engine... need help quick!

first post here from a long time lurker... i have decided to take the plunge and go with LS power for my current 67 camaro build.

i have a great opportunity to get an ls2 t/56 combo from a 2006 gto. the motor looks really good and the price is great (5500 very complete pullout). the owner says it has 8k miles on it and it really looks like it and is willing to guarantee it, he is a guy i know who owns a local hot rod shop who had a customer skip town on a car and he just wants out of the stuff.

my question is this. short of starting the motor up... what should I check for?

Really the only thing you can check for is damage from the wreck if the guy is willing to wright out a guarantee go for it realize if it has set for a long time the injectors may be bad from stale gas

do a compression check or hold your hand over the oil fill hole and check for escaping pressure when the engine is running.this will tell you if the rings are good or there is blow by.listen to the valve train and pull the valve covers .

Aside from a thorough visual inspection, probably your best bet.
