Cam work questions
I have been trying to do as much research as i can on the near future mods i would like to do on my Camaro and i am now on to learning what i should do for a cam. I want a setup that will bump me up a good amount of ponies but still be good for my car which is a daily driver but i dont know what the specs for a cam of that nature would be. Also i was wondering what kind of work i would need to do in my heads such as possibly getting new springs and rockers. Thanks!

right sorry... 2000 z28, 135k on engine, about 40k on tranny (rebuilt), a4, stock rear end and gears. cam will be done at the same time as lts and ory, ls6 intake and hopefully stall.

stock rockers work great ,but with hi-mileage maybe do a trunnion upgrade.look at a tsp cam pkg, cam, springs, and push rods.you will need a cam install pkg also.consider a 3500+ stall converter,it will have a lock up clutch .do a valve job on your heads ,install new valve guild seals and the springs from the cam pkg you buy.

Long story short is your going to trade high RPM HP for Driveability. Some of it can be tuned out but a GOOD tuner but your going to have "cranky" driveability. Your tolerence will be the main determination of what you can deal with.
IF you stay around 224/224 to 230/230 range on the intake and no lower then 112 LSA people typically can make high 300's to the rear (depending on driveline) also Cam Lobe choice will factor here too. MOST if not all decent sized cams need stall and rear gear increases. As well as supporting mods to take advantage of new found flow.
You will read/meet guys out there Daily Driving T-rex cams or MS4's on a 346 LS1 and saying there are no issues. Not saying they are wrong in their opinion but I would not take their advice as fact. More rather that they can deal with the quirks of driveability better than others.
Rockers are not required but like stated the Trunion Upgrade has become popular in recent years. Pushrods are required and a spring kit to match the cam. Also figure in gaskets, oil pump, and at min LS2 timing chain. Fluids, tuning, and the Aluminum Dowel rods you need to cut and use to hold up the lifters (do not trust the lifter cups in the heads, lifters have dropped into the oil pan).
Most of this is general info but should give you a good idea of where you need to be and as far as budget, plan at least 1000-1500$ and your still doing your own work.

That's brutal cost wise...... its my dd so I don't want to make it destroy my ride either.. its got me thinking now weather I should just stick to the more elementary mods.

Call one of the sponsors like Vengeance Racing or Texas Speed. Tell them what your goals are and they will have plenty of info for you. You will need a tune if you go to a aftermarket cam and valve train. A stall converter will make it all work correctly too if you decide on a larger cam. With a manual trans you can do it for under a grand. But with a auto you are going to be spending more money for the stall. ($1200-$1500)
