What is a cut-out?
Sorry for the noob question, I know most of the mods pretty well and what they do. But I have no idea what a cut-out is and what it does. I hear they are cheap, was wondering what, if any gains it would give my car?
I was reading that if you plan on doing headers, then don't waste your time on a cut out.
My current mods are in my sig, hope those would help support a cut-out.

It is basically a hole in your exhaust before the muffler.
Read:

Most people use an electric cutout though, which bolts on to the welded on pipe so you can open/close it without getting out of your car (really fun to **** off the cops with loud exhaust then close the cutoff and say "I have no idea what you are talking about, it is stock and quiet." )

So how do you turn it on or off?
It's basically like taking your whole exhaust system off with the flip of a switch, and then putting it back on? Doesn't sound like there's much in the way of performance gains, right?

Read the link and it explains on how the stock exhaust is restrictive.
You poke a hole in that, you release some of the exhaust and making it a bit less restrictive, and thereby gaining some power.
You turn it on/off with an electric switch in the case of an electric cutout.
As for a manual one, there are 3 bolts that hold on a metal plate that plugs the hole for when you want to "turn it off."

Sorry for the noob question again...but with an electric cut out...where do you put the switch at? Would you have to do lots of wiring work to get it inside the car?

I hear it is the least restrictive, I like that about it. Haven't really felt much an HP gain with it though. Would getting a cutout make my car even louder though? And where would you fit the electric switch in your car at?

no cut outs- Goes to your cat back system and exhaust.
Cut out- skips the cat back for a free-er flowing exhaust, good for a few hp..probably wont notice it even at WOT, or very little.
And yes, electric cut outs are turned on/off with the flip of a switch.. and would be louder, angering many elderly neighbors.

it would if you pointed the cutout towards the ground (but then you have a bigger chance of hitting it on a bump) you just lead the wires into the cabin (alot of people put it next to the seat switches). your not gonna feel the slight gain. i have Longtubes, ORY and the lm1 without a tune and i havent felt anything

Is it very difficult to wire that switch and fit it into your car?
My car is already loud with the SLP LM1 on it, will a cutout make it even louder? I wouldn't mind being able to turn it on once in awhile, and just care the **** out of someone. If it's only $60 I think I'll buy it, lol.

Just checked them online. Seems like a cutout is about $60, an electric cutout, which is what I want, is about $180.
How long is the install on something like this? Will it be much louder than what my car with SLP LM1 already is?

the easiest answer is....you already have a SLP LM1 (which is the least restrictive single exhaust out there), you do not need a cutout , do your spending and research elsewhere.

where did you see the 180? and it depends on where you place it. if its on the slp part of your exhaust, you will need a 3", if its on your ypipe it will be 2.5" plus you also have to think about the install. i think they need to be welded in and if you put it before the resonator, it will sound different but just by alittle

I just checked www.pfyc.com and www.ws6store.com they both have electric cut-outs for $180.
From what the other guy says my car is already as loud as it will get, don't know if a cut-out is worth is now. For $180 I could get a CAI, a ported TB, or something else.

I have a 2001, it comes with the LS6 intake already.
Don't know much about a ported TB, was wondering about it though and what the gains are.
Maybe I'll get a ram-air intake instead of a CAI then?

sorry i thought it was a 98 for some reason... theres not much of a gain at all. its so small you wont notice it. and the slp lid is good enough. people pushing 400+ and still using the slp lid with the stock filter. you dont need the giant scoops for the air intake, it could be worse for your car if you hit a giant puddle... save up for some LT's and ORY
