WS6 Chrome Rims damage due to salt oxidation rust? pics
I bought a 1998 Trans am WS6 from an auction. California vehicle on the Car fax 1 owner. I spotted rust under the car. The car is from Wastonville area Bay area Ocean at fault?
Rims have white milkly splashes all over rims. No texture feel the rims are smooth. Any ideas on cheapest to most pricey fixes for these rims?

This is not rust, and the wheels do not have a chrome finish.
What you are dealing with are polished aluminum wheels that have been clear coated. It seems that the clear coat has been breached and the aluminum underneath has begun to corrode.
I think you have already found the only real soloution; strip the clear, refinish/repolish the aluminum, and re-clear.

I'm a big fan of the OEwheels option too, but just be aware after shipping and some decent rubber you'll be looking at about $2K. That's the only reason I haven't gotten a set yet.

I started working on 1 rim. I used klean strip k3 premium, the clear coat bubbled right off. I then tried buffing the rim with mothers powerball and mothers Mag/ALU Polish. It worked good where the aluminum doesn't have corrosion. I need to sand first then polish to a shine. I might paint them black like Kev SS in the future i just want them looking clean right now.
If i was to buy oewheels i would get these ZR1 Wheel Black
What grade of sand paper if best to use on polished aluminium? Will I need 400 and 1000 or will one grade be enough then start polishing.

Looking much better! I'd probably try the 2000, maybe 2500 even. Then finished off with some metal polish.
If you're not going to re-clear them, then you'll need to keep them waxed to reduce the frequency of necessary repolishes.

I'd check into possibly a clear powder coat. May give you the protective skin you have been looking for.
Many places offer the service so if you can do your own work and get it to a level that you are ok with. I would certainly think about checking them out. Mine have a few spots but nothing critical but something I have thought about. But if I did that I would have a rim shop go over the rim for straightness, any rash, and get the inside machined clean so when it does go. I want P/C inside and out.
