Default Horrible MPG? How to improve it?

98 Z M6 *bone stock. I get anywhere from 150-190 miles per tank (15.5 gal tank). I *do get on it quite a bit... but seriously? 150 miles on a full tank? I'm not constantly racing if you're thinking that... just quick little pulls onto the freeway or at some red lights. Just the average driving of a car enthusiast in love with his car. I do realize an LS1 is nothing to brag about when it comes to MPG, but should it be This bad? What should I replace to get better MPG? Injectors?? I'm in high school so paying for a high compression pushrod V8 isn't exactly my favorite thing in the world right now (definitely worth it though). Any help on improving my MPG would be appreciated by me and the o-zone hah.

Thats about what I get with a cam and full exhaust. Spirited driving will cost you gas mileage. Also if you have a commute with lots of stops lights that will hurt too. As far as things to replace you might be able to swap a v6 and do a little better....

Yea hah I immediately stated I was on stock motor... because that gas mileage sounds about right for what you said you got in you car lol. I know that getting on it everywhere is gonna cost me, but for the most part I'm not. Damn red lights haha. LS1 to V6? no thanks man ^_^ Hell, maybe I'll just pickup a 4 banger honda and drive that when I need to get to/from school and save the LS1 for any **** talkers.

I get 290 to 320 miles out of a tank if I drive carefully. 275 to 290 when I play a bit. My 2000 A4 with 3.23's has gotten 17.5 mpg at the worst. You might want to start looking for a vacuum leak or see if you have a mechanical problem. The PCV system is known to leak at the fittings and the rubber hose will break in places. Wish I could be of more help, let us know what you find.

Is that on the highway or going through the city?.. Maybe I'll look at it once I get it back home. My Z just got a new 00 LS1 swapped in (old one threw a rod) so maybe there was something wrong with it. Once I start driving it again with the new motor in, I'll find out. I just wanted to know if anyone else was getting this bad of gas mileage. Thank you though, I'll inspect the old motor when I can and see what may have been robbing me of my $ hah.

I've read quite a few gas mileage threads on here as well, and I'm stock just like you besides a catback and lid. In town, where stop signs and stop lights are abundant, my gas mileage is horrible right at what you're getting (and that's with shifting around 2k the whole tank and few "spirited" drives.) . I've done plugs & wires, fuel filter, etc and hasn't helped much. I can pull 30mpg on the straight freeway driving though so I attribute the shitty mileage to how bad the stop and go is.

That sounds way off. Im getting 18 to 19 in a stock Trans Am convertible. I was getting not far from what you were getting, a simple plug and wire change, MAF cleaning, and changing the oil/gear oil got me to where I am.

17.5 is the worst, and most of that was around town. I have been getting 21 on the highway with occasional spirited driving.

The MAF cleaning with a oiled (or possibly non oiled ) air filter fixed a long standing hesitation, lack of response problem with mine.

Average MPG was 12.3 in my LS1 Camaro and about the same in my LS1 Firebird. I don't keep out of it and have lots of stop signs and/or traffic lights.

Buy a prius if you care about gas mileage.

Yea when I'm driving to save some $ I usually shift around 2k as well, often skipping gears too.

Maybe I'll give that a shot!

I don't care... I have an LS1 F Body as my first car in High school lol, I think we can all rule out me giving a damn haha. Just wanted to know if anyone else was getting the same MPG as me and if I could improve it. Believe me I had PLENTY of opportunities to pickup an economy car... not for me.

Yeah....just giving you a hard time. There could be something off. However you can get bad gas mileage in anything. My son had a stock auto Mach1 and mine was procharged 5 speed with 4:10's and we got the same mileage.

When I first got my car, a 1999 Formula A4 with 2.73's, I was getting about 22.5mpg with a Borla exhaust. I put a lid on and my mileage has decreased a little but I think its because I have been getting on it more having fun. Sitting between 19-20mpg right now.

MPG's usually suffer slightly in the cold weather too

Since nobody asked I got to. You are running 93 octane in the 98 aren't you? Hell I'm getting better mileage than you are.
