Default Plastic piece under car?

So about the plastic piece tht hangs under the car about a foot behind the front bumper is this there for cooling purposes? is it to draw air into the engine?how affective is it? Should I leave it or remove it?

Its an air dam that directs air up and through your radiator/airbox into the engine.
Definitely leave it there.
This is because there isn't really a 'Grille" on our cars, so we have to get the air from somewhere.
