Default Built LS1 performance question

Hey gents,

Sorry for the newb-ish question, I still have a lot of reading and research to do. I'm eventually looking to do an LSx swap on my E36, and wanted to ask you guys what kind of performance / fuel mileage I could expect from a moderately built LS1/T56. My goal is roughly 450hp n/a, while still being practical and streetable. I've found a motor with the lunati 395 stroker kit / mild cam installed, and was wondering if something like this would be worth pursuing.

If anyone has any better/cheaper recommendations for achieving those goals though, I'm all ears. I still have a lot to learn with these motors. I appreciate your help.

with the right rear end gears you can still realistically squeak out low to mid 20's

Looking to go aluminum or iron block ? What is the stroke on that lunati crank to get the 395ci ?

most likely aluminum for the weight savings. not a huge difference but not insignificant. the stroke on the 395 kit is 4.125": http://www.lunatipower.com/Product.aspx?id=379&gid=187

You want the compression around 10.5:1 / 11:1 for a N/A moter. Also a 4.125 stroke crank in a ls1 block is pushing the limits. If the machining isn't perfect =

The iron blocks weigh 100-120 pounds more than the aluminum blocks so if weight is a consern go aluminum.
If the extra weight doesnt bother you I would start with the Iron 6.0L block (lq4 or lq9) and bore it .020 over and stick a 4" stroke rotating assemly in there getting you to 408ci. That with a good head/cam package, intake, and long tubes will get you past your 450hp goal N/A.

450 na is easy to get but if gas mileage is a big deal, why not supercharge or turbo it? You can get 450 whp with 30 mpg on a 6 speed

Just as an example my 01 Z06 has 450rwhp from a heads/cam 5.7l and I still got 27mpg on my last trip to DFW. Give us a call or send me a PM and I can get you a quote for a similar package as far as heads/cam goes.

true, power comes easy with f/i but i hate turbos and fitting a supercharger with the required plumbing under my hood becomes an issue (its a bmw 95 e36). i think a centrifugal blower with a custom bracket would be my only option as far as f/i goes, not really a headache i want to deal with on top of everything else related to the swap...fabbing motor mounts, trans mounts, headers, full exhaust, custom driveshaft, splicing harnesses, etc. not something i want to deal with initially anyway.

I understand it'd be a lot more work, it's just that gas mileage will drop quick on an n/a build. 450 isn't radical so you could probably still get low 20's cruising.

My cars old setup which went 11.20s on the second shake down pass, and was a ~450rw setup, knocked off 24.86 mpg with 4.10s running the a/c and cruise control in hilly mountainous terrain! These cars can still achieve great fuel economy even when modded.

you can always call AES and get the 398. great deal on a fantastic product. It may take a little longer, but consider they are also busy building top fuel engines and stuff as well. texas speed builds awesome motors too. its a win win.

that's what i'm going for. i still plan on dd'ing the car when the weather favors it so maintaining those mpg's is somewhat important to me. i'd probably be running a 3.91 in the rear, not a big difference but might help a bit. how did you like the 4.10?

I loved the 4.10s. I installed them when I only had bolt ons, they were nice then too. I've had 4.30s since 08 when I installed the M9, love them as well
