Default The old tick question again

Cold start ups , summer temps, I get a ticking noise from my ls1 with only 8500 miles. After it warms up it goes a way . When I bought the car didn't happen. I changed the oil to mobil 1 5.5 quarts. I have no idea what was in it before I changed it out, but it did't tick ! The ticking seems to come from the top of the motor. No mods to at all. Thanks

Sounds like valve train noise. What kind of mileage do you have on it?

Certain oils seem to lead to a noisier valvetrain on certain cars. In my experience, conventional oils seem to run quieter than so-called synthetics. Mobil 1 5-30 is known to be a "thinner" oil that possibly could have something to do with it. I'd try a conventional 5-30 or 10-30 and see if you notice a difference.

They call that one the infamous LS1 "piston slap". The expanding and contraction of the aluminum cylinder wall to piston head. That LS1 will most likely have that embarrassing, annoying, and thinking its going to blow up on Ya "tick" for the rest of its days. You will try so many different brands and viscosity oils , but really does not change much of anything. Stick with a good synthetic oil with the recommended viscosity and live with the "tick" , usually is gone in a couple of minutes.

Mobil 1 5-30 is known to be a "thin" 30 weight. No surprise that you have a little more valvetrain noise with it. Go with a conventional 5-30 when you change it and see if it makes a difference.

Did you notice any needle bearings in the oil after you changed it?
