Default Cats for back pressure or no cats?

I have a 2001 camaro ss with few bolt ons, intake, exhaust. I have long tube headers with high flow cats waiting to be put on but cant quite decide what to do. Would it be better to run the cats so i can get more back pressure to help my low end or if i gut them would it be better without the back pressure or would i not necissarily need the back pressure? My longtubes are 1 3/4". Please let me know, thanks.

There's no substance to the back pressure = low end torque myth. Better flow equals more power, period. The reasons to run cats are exhaust smell and to soften and mellow the exhaust tone - cutting down rasp.

the whole backpressure thing is a misunderstanding that relates to primary size (oversized primaries kill exhaust velocity and hurt power down low)

Get rid of those cats if you're lucky like me and don't have a state inspection or emissions

Cats do absolutely nothing to increase power; they can only hurt (just how much they hurt depends on the overall setup). They are strictly an emissions device that are not needed if you don't have to take a sniffer test.

BINGO. If you care and have time you can search the back pressure myths on this site. Its a lot of info about it.

If your engine needs restriction to make power, it's time for a different cam.

If u want it loud and little smell of gas then time to remove them. My exhaust tone sounded so much better after removing the cats

Depending on the application I would go with high flow cats. Maybe I am getting older but the gas smell is getting old.

Today's drivers and most of the younger crowd in general just aren't used to it. All cars used to smell like this, especially those with a high performance cam. It has never bothered me.

This is good to know. So the cats are not needed. If they are removed will it throw the check engine light and if it does will it affect the power?

Tuning or O2 sims can take care of the light (yes, there will be one). The light will not affect power.

It all depends on the tune.

punch out ur high flow cats and tune out your cats, rear o2 and your EGR... u don't need any of that... but if you need to pass emissions u'll need something to pass the visual inspection thats why i said punch them out.

If true high flow, you should see rite threw them, if so nothing to punch out , and no problem with rear o2s, may / may not require re tune ( should not need ) I retune quite often anyway
