Default Help 101

I'm building my 1st LQ4 engine. I need help with cam & intake selection. I plan to put this engine in a 84 chevy truck & use it as a daily driver. I will have the 317 heads ported/polished. I have an 4L60 tranny that i plan on putting good parts in. I would like to use a stock converter with this engine. I would like to use a cam that has the same specs as the GM Hot cam. I would like to use the computer & wiring harness that came with this engine. Headers will be included.. I'm changing out the pistons to flattop. Will i need to change the rods and rocker arms? I don't wanna change any pulleys except move the AC compressor up. Any input or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Stock rods and rocker arm will be fine. you are going with Fuel Injection correct? if so Truck Intake will be fine.. for cam selection there is a hand full of good choices, good cam for daily driver and using stock converter in a full size truck i think would be Comp Cams 212/218 "HIGH LIFT" Grind Number: LS1 XR265HR-15, Duration at 050 inch Lift: 212 int./218 exh. 0.558 int./0.563 exh. lift 115 LSA.. or TSP 224R. is always good choice for DD and sounds good.. but there is a good amount for cam options. all depends on what kinda idle you want and power range. Some can even custom grind a cam for your setup.

Also i wouldnt spend the money to have heads Ported and Polished, 317 flow good already.. IMO if i were going to have heads ported for LQ4 id go for 5.3 heads and bump compression up some. and save the 317 for some boost!

Any reason for changing pistons? do you have a good short block or rebuilding?

I read that the only difference between the LQ4 and the LQ9 is the pistions which gives the LQ9 more hp. I want this to be on the sleeper side also. Yes the engine came with everything i needed. I just broke it down and I'm putting it in the machine shop this week.

consider a 5.3 head with a smaller chamber .don't polish head ports ,it don't help.get good push rods .get new rocker arm bearings .consider the gm ASA cam .
