Default Mod ?'s

My car is basically stock as of now. I want to remove the flowmaster that came on it and replace it with either a LM or Borla Catback. I will aslo be adding an aftermarket lid, probably TSP. I have heard that flowmaster actually hurts more than helps. With that in mind when I replace it with a better flowing catback and adding a lid, will I feel a gain? (SOTP)

TIA,

JT

Probably not. You MAY gain a couple of hp, say 5-10, but you won't notice it.

you should add a cutout with that catback lid and you will feel it, could gain around 2 or 3 tenths over stock

Or get GMMG. I've heard people gaining little if any hp with a cutout, using GMMG.

Friend of mine went from 298RWHP (stock 6-speed 2002 with 500miles) to 330RWHP with a lid and cutout.

Ive got another friend with a 98 that has lt headers off road y pipe and corsa that gained 5 hp with the cut out open.

first off ABLOSUTLY no cat back on the planet out flows a cutout... how can you out flo wide open?
i saw 13 rwhp gain with my lt1
and 10 with my ls1 over the ws6 exhast

typical gains are 10-15 from just the cut out...
and its pretty normal to see 7-10 from a good lid...

Are there any reccomended muffler shops in Houston (Perferably NW Houston) to install a cutout? Should I have them weld in my new catback and cutout all at the same time, or just bolt up the catback myself and have them weld in the cutout?'

Thanks again guys...

We are near Willowbrook mall and do full custom exhaust work. What catback did you end up going with?

Robert, I live 5 miles north of 1960 and 249. Where exactly is the shop located? I would be interested in checking somethings out.

Thanks...

i would bolt up the catback and then have them weld it up when you get cutout

lemme help ya some more...
your flowmaster exhast is 3" mandrel bent just like every other cat back out there...
the problem with it is in the 80 series muffler that comes on it.. THAT and not the plumbing is whats wronge...
since a cutout is installed before the muffler(in the i pipe) then the fact that the muffler is crap is a mute point.

keep the set up you have and save the $$$ for headers. have a cutout welded into what you have ... you will get a good hp gain. and it will still have the flow master note only MUCH louder...

jaberwaki,

Is a cutout going to be too loud for driving around town and should be reserved for the track? I really am not that all impressed with the flowmaster sound. I definitely want something louder, however don't care for too much attention that cops would bother me.

Thanks in advance...

People drive open cutout 24/7. It's not too loud. No louder than the Loudmouth in reality. You should be okay with the cops as long as you aren't driving like an @ss, when a louder car makes it appear that much worse. Heck, I went open header for a month and was never bothered by anybody

Thanks for everyone's advice, I think I'm going to keep my old exhaust and add a cutout for now and see how I like it.

If you do decide to go with a new cat back in the future go with the Borla. Good quality and nice sound.
