Default How to know what cam/head/intake is for me?

Hey guys, I have read a little about cams but Its all a foreign language to me. I daily drive my formula. So I know I dont want to big of a cam/lope. However the sound and performance would be nice. I have looked at tickperformance street heat stage 2 cams, but I don't know what else I would need. Valve springs, rocker arms, pushrods? then how do i match a head for that cam? As far as intake would a ls6 intake with ported TB be fine? Power goals for me are trying to reach 400hp or more without sacrificing reliability and somewhat fuel economy. The car will have Lt, 3.90 gears, as bad as I dont want to Il go true duals dumped, slp lid. I live like 1.5 hours from tickperformance so a tune shouldn't be a problem

You can get 400rwhp cam only
with an LS6 intake with an M6. If ticks doing your tune I would contact Martin and get everything from them. The biggest question is how much are you willing to spend.

Agreed with this. If you are this close to Tick Performance, call them up and tell them your goals and budget. They'll hook you up.

Thanks, I was hoping to do install intake, and cam myself, heads may be a different story. Tey charge 300 for a tune which I think is slightly pricy based on 4cyl turbo tunes iv had done before. But I hear they are good so gotta pay to play. If I got with ls6 intake I see them going for 300t400, cams around 400. I would like to have intake, cams, valve springs and other small stuff for around 1000. Heads are petty much and other 1000 correct?

If buying the heads new new from a reputable vendor, i've seen some right in the 1000 range. Like for for instance were about 1300 from Texas Speed

If you get the LS6 for $300 youll be more like $1500 after everything plus then you still need a tune.

By everything do you mean cam, intake, and heads? or just cam and intake?
1500 is very manageable for me to hit within 10 weeks or so.
What kinda numbers would that tick cam, decent heads, ls6 intake, slp lid, lt true dual dumped, put up ya think?
I mean if just cams put me near/at 400hp whats the rest?

OP, are you looking to buy a brand new set of heads that have been worked over completely, or just some used aftermarket stock heads or what?

Im really not super picky. I would pick up a nice set of used heads. whether that be reworked stock heads or aftermarket.

Thanks Martin, with your stage 2 street heat cam is it required to run different cam spring/rods/retainers? Or would the stock setup work for the time being until heads are purchase?

I highly recommend a BTR Platinum spring kit with that camshaft along with hardened chromoly push rods in a minimum of 5/16" diameter and .080" wall thickness.

We sell a package with the camshaft, BTR Platinum springs and push rods for 695.00 shipped.

As another interested reader of this topic, and by no means an expert, I have a question pertaining to this topic for the experts. Wouldn't it be wise at the time of cam swap, to change out the lifters & trays (Since most should pull the heads instead of trusting the lifter tray's ability to hold the lifters on higher mileage motors) as well as upgrading to the LS6 oil pump or HD equivalent? Also, if yes, then would be the smart time to change to the upgraded cam spec heads, instead of pulling them again and replacing the head gaskets and all the misc. of doing a head swap.
