Finally got an F body.
I came across a 2001 z28 loaded with t tops. One owner car, older guy from a retirement community in central Fl. 61k miles and the dash cracked up in the florida sun but the rest is solid. I cant complain for 8k after walkin away from multiple higher mile higher priced cars. Original plans were to put 6.0 stroked to 396 or 408 in it and using the ls1 in a wrangler or my truck but after driving it for a couple days I think I may just cam and stroke the ls1. The car will be a weekend driver and the build will be done right for future shows with my children. 1 question I have is, is there any known detune products on stock z28 that can be removed? Ive heard of that stuff on v6 and 4 bangers so I was just wondering. Ive also read that wheel selection is better in the 17s the 18s are hard to hook up. I know I want a 9 or 10 in the rear and looking for advise from others that have been there and found the sweet spot. Any ways thats the jewel I found and im glad to finally be a member of LS1 Tech instead of a creepy lurker. Thanks in advance for the feedback.

Looks like a solid car. Congrats! You shouldn't have to worry about a speed
limiter to remove unless it came with the 16" 235 non high performance tires
from the factory.

Nice buy! Mine is pewter as well and I love it. My best suggestion to "get rid of "detuned" restrictions" would be to get a dyno tune for it. If you are planning on doing bolt ons and cam as well as some internal work, I would save your money and get the dyno tune last.

Thanks. Im not sure what came stock on it it has mis matched tires now but ill look into it. And I wasnt sure about a pewter car but for the price ill have to find a way to make matt black work with it. Im excited about it I remember working on hot rods with my dad and now I have 2 boys so I cant wait to start building. Forgive me for stupidity but should I do the dyno tune before or after the cam?

You would do the dyno tune after the cam. A dyno tune, or any kind of tune, reprograms the computer to what is done to the car. So if you tune it before the cam, then once you swap cams, it no longer has a tune optimized for what is done to it. A tune should always be the last thing you do.

Not sure why it reposted my last post but it is what it is. I have a lot to think about when it comes to the motor I guess. I need to focus on interior problems first im sure they will be harder to find in the future. Then move to my power plant. How strong is the 4l60e with vette servos compared to 80e? Id rather have more than needed than be broke down.

Really nice,
Looks about like mine. I found that I like 245's on the front (just a little easier in the steering dept.) than the 275's I tried. I do wish I would have gone w/ something wider than 275s in the rear though. Mine was a super low mile car that the dealer was having sensor issues with and wanted to get rid of it cheap or I may have held out for a different color. But now I am hooked on the pewter. I also have an 02 Mystic Green Z28 'vert and the pewter one is the one I choose to drive.... so I think it will grow on you. The wheels on mine are 17" x 9.5's.

You also may want to check w the local tuner...... my local guy will do a tune for 175.00 and you can bring it back in to have it retuned for any mods for free any time. A dyno tune at same place is 400.00 and same policy... if you make mods he will put it back on dyno for free.

Thanks for the info. Havent looked into tune shops but im not far from jacksonville and im sure there has to be a hand full to choose from. Do you know of any mods I might have to do to fit the 295 on 18×11 in the rear?

Thanks for the replies. I havent seen 315s on an fbody so I guess I need to do some research before ordering wheels and tires. On another note I ordered some lights because I got a great deal on them then I cought mod fever. I ported and polished my TB, did the TB bypass, modified the stock air box and cut the air dam. I started late yesterday afternoon and finished after work this evening. I was really surprised at the power gained for free. Id much rather be working on a 408 or adding a fast intake but I was happy just working on the car and seeing improvements. Long story short, im addicted.

Welcome to the board and congratulation on the new purchase! It sounds like you're having fun.
As for fitting an 18x11 wheel in the rear, it will depend on your offset, however I imagine you would want to run a 305 or 315 rear tire. I'm running a 305/35 and added a 1.25" hub-centric spacer to the rear to get it to fit without taking a hammer to the car.
After cutting up a $700 set of new tires, I also bought an adjustible panhard bar to center the rear and rolled the fenders. Wish I would've ponied up for those items BEFORE cutting the tires!

Nice find! I guarantee you will love it once you get a few things done that you are planning. Wish I had more money to finish mine quicker but that's why I enjoy every little thing I do. Question... are you stationed at Dyess in Abilene, tx? just curious by the username
