I have an 01 SS (6speed) and when I take the e-brake off the engine shuts down when the e-brake lever hits the switch at the bottom. Why? It has never done this before.

did you just get the car? previous owner could have installed some type of kill switch. pull the console and check the wiring

the car is new to me as of last fall. It is wrecked but runs and drives. Drove it on the trailer to get it home and moved it around the shop a couple times without any issues. This spring when i went to pull it out of the shop for spring cleaning is when the problem started. Its twice as frustrating when the battery is dead and you have to jump the car. lol. I have removed the console and found the small single wire switch on the emergency brake. the e-brake opens the contact when the lever is let all the way down. Is that stock on these? I can take a pic if it helps. I thought kill switch but haven't seen an on/off for one.

make sure its not messing with neutral safety switch or shorting out and back feeding?

Sounds to me like you have a battery charging system issue. When the E-brake is let off, the headlights come on and the battery goes way down below required voltage for the engine to continue to run. Charge battery

Thanks, i forgot about the headlight thing. i haven't had a 4th gen in almost 10 years now.

Makes sense but i have one question. Since the car is wrecked, there are no lights on the front, does that make a difference? With no lights there would be no load.

I haven't spent much time on it but i did start it today and turned the headlight switch on and it died right away just like when I take the e-brake off. But like i said there are no lights to generate a load. Could the issue be the two grounds on the upper radiator support? they are currently unhooked while I work on the damaged front end.

Are the headlight positive leads grounding? If so, then it is a direct short causing your issue.
Wrecked cars can be an electric night mare but I think you can get it straightened out

Got it! I checked the head light wiring and found nothing. Hooked the two small grounds up that attach to the upper radiator support and problem solved. Feel kind of dumb now but hey, live and learn right?
