Default 4.8 in a Monte Carlo SS

Hi everyone, newbie here. I have a bone stock 84 Monte Carlo SS. I've purchased a 4.8 with 20k orig miles to put in the car. I am also picking up a used 4L60E but it's getting a rebuild. I'll be keeping the 3.42 gear and using a stock stall converter. Stock manifolds and 2.5in dual exhaust. I might go headers.

Is it worth the investment to do a performance cam swap in a 4.8? My goal for the car is to be a fun driver. I'd like that high performance sound but it has to work with Air, power brakes and a stock stall. I am figuring a cam with matching valvetrain runs about $800.

a stock stall converter will limit the choices of cams .you can check Texas Speed or vengeance racing for prices on cam pkgs .
