Default Dropping the engine. What would you refresh while it out?

Car now over 170k looking to drop engine and trans for a clutch job and gasket refresh.
1998 transam
Plans are full bolt on for now but cam may be part of the plans.

224-228 haven't decided yet.

I'm thinking while it out I'll be doing the following.
Front and rear main seals
Oil pan gasket
Oil pump
Timing chain/gear
Arp rod bolt

What would you add to the list while it's out?

If you can afford a cam I would do that while the engine is out. I would also consider pulling the heads and changing the lifters, trays and head gaskets while your at it.

I personally would not do ARP rod bolts unless you plan on pulling the entire engine down and have the rods resized with the new hardware.

rocker arm bearings .2nd on leaving the rod bolts alone .use a feeler gauge and measure your rod side clearances,if loose then rebuild the rods with new bolts .rebuild the heads ,new seals and springs .if you have a m6 look at the Ed curtis streetsweeper .

Maybe do a hot compression test before you pull it. That will tell you wear in cylinders..kinda. Good non-invasive health check. Lower-mile 6.0 is cheap and all your goodies bolt on/in!!

Thanks for the reply.

I thought the rod bolt on these things are one of the week point so I figured it's best tackle this now while it's out. I didn't realize they need to be balance with new bolt?

This is actually my plan tomorrow. Hopefully everything checks out. But acceptable value is less than 10% for ls1 correct?

Also know any how to? I've done the test before but can't seem to find which cylinder turns TDC together

It is weak for a lot of >6500RPM duty. But in theory when re-torquing the rods the right way to do it is to have the rods resized. Many have just popped them in and never looked back. Others not so lucky. Search the forums for "katech arp rod bolt" and form your own opinion. Still a matter of debate for a lot of folks.

Here's a thread about compression and leakdown testing:

Good luck.
