I just got jet hot headers, ORY, and exhaust for $1100. That should give you nice gains. You would proabably need a lid too tho because its going to need to breathe too. However i dont really know the best way. Thats just what i decided to get after looking on here a lot.
Theres a post somewhere that tells the best 1st mods.

Converter, TCI SSF3500: $520
Transgo shift kit: $110
Trannsmission Cooler: $50
Basic tune at shop: $100-$150
That is $830 max leaving room for shipping, possible taxes, put towards the drag radials you will want, beer/food for friends that help or i guess you could drink it all yourself i you go it alone
Cat-back: $350
Pullies: $250
Lid: $120
Shifter: $50
!CAGS: Not sure, but cheap
Nittos: $280/pr
That is $1,050 as a guestimate

well unless you're buying some sort of true dual setup, exhaust isn't a thousand dollars. Especially not for a catback. Borla brand new is six or seven hundred, and GMMG is 800. hooker is what, 350? and if u go with a TR camshaft install kit its 700. i'm sure you could find a kit w/a few hundred, or a few thousand miles on it for much cheaper. it IS possible to do exhaust and a cam.....or exhaust and LT's(pacesetters are $400?). just not all three.

If you will BE putting a system in, and i don't know much about that, you might want a new alt or you can at least get underdrive pulleys for everything but the alt, which you can get an OVERdrive pulley for.

A converter should not be too bad if you ahve tools, some mechanical know-how, and a friend to help out. It is not too fun on jackstands. I think that the shift kit might be more in depth than the converter itself. I did headers myself, and plan to do cam/springs/pushrods myself, but am having LS1speed do my converter, shift kit, pan, and cooler. Search for free mods, should find some results that help. I think the best one is the free air (FRA) mod where you cut out some of the buttom of your airbox to let fresher, cooler air in.

a buddy is gona cut me a metal pipe for my intake and ima order a flat k&n filter or dual flat ones not sure yet but ima just take eveyr last platick piece that used to be part of that or restrict air flow out. like all the stuff under the old air box and stuff ima jst get rid of it..thats not gonna hurt anything is it? and we are just gonna make something similar to the ram air deal slp and others sell
