I just got jet hot headers, ORY, and exhaust for $1100. That should give you nice gains. You would proabably need a lid too tho because its going to need to breathe too. However i dont really know the best way. Thats just what i decided to get after looking on here a lot.

Theres a post somewhere that tells the best 1st mods.

You need to list something about your car first.

Year
M6 or A4

WHAT you should do is get more specific. What year, tranny, can you do installs yourself? If you can do stuff yourself or with some buddies, and you have an A4, look into getting a converter, shift kit, and transmission cooler. Will have to do some basic tuning for shift points and possibly torque management, etc. I would recommend finding a way to get a converter and install the stuff yourself if you have an A4 or going through simple boltons if you have an M6. A cat-back, sticky tires, lid, CAGS delete, a new shifter, and underdrive pulleys will make a decent improvement and cost a little bit more than $1k. Could cut one item from list if you are really tight on the money. depending on what brands you get, etc.

Converter, TCI SSF3500: $520
Transgo shift kit: $110
Trannsmission Cooler: $50
Basic tune at shop: $100-$150
That is $830 max leaving room for shipping, possible taxes, put towards the drag radials you will want, beer/food for friends that help or i guess you could drink it all yourself i you go it alone

Cat-back: $350
Pullies: $250
Lid: $120
Shifter: $50
!CAGS: Not sure, but cheap
Nittos: $280/pr
That is $1,050 as a guestimate

With only $1,000! I doubt that very many people could pull that off. You'd have to do all the work yourself, have all the tools, and buy cheap parts to even come close. I'd like to see a list showing how either of those could be done properly at quoted price, please. I think that most people end up spending at least $1k on just the exhaust, cam, or converter alone.

well unless you're buying some sort of true dual setup, exhaust isn't a thousand dollars. Especially not for a catback. Borla brand new is six or seven hundred, and GMMG is 800. hooker is what, 350? and if u go with a TR camshaft install kit its 700. i'm sure you could find a kit w/a few hundred, or a few thousand miles on it for much cheaper. it IS possible to do exhaust and a cam.....or exhaust and LT's(pacesetters are $400?). just not all three.

When I say exhaust I mean the whole thing. He is stock and would need headers, y-pipe, AND cat-back. True Duals to the axle can be cheaper than a Y-pipe and cat-back depending on brand. I don't count a cat-back as having exhaust, especially since I was quoitng someone saying you could do headers and cam or headers and converter. I'd like to see how you could do headers (and thus full exhaust on his stock car) AND a cam or converter.

Yes, it is usefull, but it's not a cover-all for newbies wanting to know what to do. It is very good at explainign what things are, what they can do, and how to do it though.

ineedatruck: WHAT would you want 4.10's for? Most autos seem to choose 3.73's. A converter will work MUCH better than gears. If you will BE putting a system in, and i don't know much about that, you might want a new alt or you can at least get underdrive pulleys for everything but the alt, which you can get an OVERdrive pulley for.

A converter should not be too bad if you ahve tools, some mechanical know-how, and a friend to help out. It is not too fun on jackstands. I think that the shift kit might be more in depth than the converter itself. I did headers myself, and plan to do cam/springs/pushrods myself, but am having LS1speed do my converter, shift kit, pan, and cooler. Search for free mods, should find some results that help. I think the best one is the free air (FRA) mod where you cut out some of the buttom of your airbox to let fresher, cooler air in.

Order of mods:

Lid
Cat-back
Headers
Cam

Might be able to do the first 3 with $1000, then do #4 when money permits.

well I look at it this way tsp was just having a converter sale...i think ssf 3500 was $469...I ended up getting my pacesetters & ypipe for less than $400 shipped to my door, if he got deals like that all youd really need is a cutout, and yah i got my converter installed by someone for $175...so your talkin a few bucks over, but minimal...look for deals and you can find alot of **** out there so dont till ya try it friend.
