Have you tried cleaning the MAF? This is simplest and cheapest thing to try that can't hurt, and might solve your particular problem.

The MAF body and screen really aren't the story. The MAF works based on heated wires. The sensor attempts to keep the wires at a certain temperature with the airflow rushing past it pulling heat out of said wire. This is how it knows how much air is coming into the intake of the motor. This wire is about the width of a few hairs. Imagine, even with a fine coating of dust, oil, or other grime, this reading can be off quite a bit. Aftermarket (K&N-type, non-paper) filters are the worst causes of this..the elements are oiled to catch small particles and that oil eventually makes it onto the MAF wires. On any vehicle that I have run a K&N or similar on, I would clean the MAF every oil change and sometimes more often.

The wires on the inside of the sensor is what you want to clean, and with either quick-drying electronics cleaner or specifically MAF cleaner. Both are normally available at any parts store. Do this with the car off and let dry a few minutes before starting the vehicle.

Cleaning the MAF, IMO, is a periodic maintenance item. Even when I am not using an aftermarket filter, I still clean mine every 5K-10K miles or so.

Have you checked for codes in the computer?

How long since you've changed the fuel filter?

Like everyone else has stated I would start with cleaning the MAF cheap and needs to be done every so often.

Engine performance issues that are mostly limited to the 2500-3500 rpm range are quite often the result of MAF problems. Usually a simple cleaning will do the trick. If a K&N-style filter has ever been in use, then it's even more likely to be a dirty MAF.

BTW, K&N-type filters only work properly with the oil. Without it, I am fairly sure it will not trap particles of dirt/etc. as well as a paper filter. So either oil it and deal with cleaning the MAF occasionally or just run a paper filter from the parts store.

I'll keep the k&n but it's not getting any oil. Too much of a pain in the dick

This is correct. The K&N needs the oil to work properly, so if you don't want to deal with that then you need to move back to a paper filter for proper filtration.
